3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Very hoppy for a porter, could almost be a black IPA. Resinous hops, roasted malts, and a little smoke up front.
Can on the golf course. Nose has some nice toasty character and a little pine, lemon rind, toast. Flavor is sweeter, more malt and a little molasses a little lemon and some bitter roast. Full bodied, bitter finish. Chalumeaux (1848) - Middleton, Massachusetts, USA - MAR 15, 2017
Poured from bottle dated 10/5/16 black with a nice tan head. Aromas of roasted chocolate malt and some hops. Taste is rich and smooth toasty flavor with a nice balanced bitterness in the finish. ffaoe (1013) - Moorestown, New Jersey, USA - FEB 18, 2017
interesting malty and hoppy aromas. pitch black in color with huge foamy brown head. medium to full body. taste is malty with chocolate and light coffee flavors as well as slight piney/resinous hop notes. Mep3222 (1708) - East Greenbush, New York, USA - FEB 1, 2017
Aroma is roasted malt, almost with a cocoa maltiness, and a nice hop balance (reminds of that classic Sierra Nevada hop). Taste is a malty black IPA that finishes dry with solid hop balance. Lots of flavor. Cocoa maltiness and piney hop finish may even be too dry, but overall this is a nice beer from two roads.

Bottle. Nose very piny, big resin and spice, big roast and astringency, sweet with grapefruit, citrus, a little dough. Pour medium brown but darkens in the glass, head light brown and sudsy. Taste medium bitter and medium sweet, very raspy but not harsh, sticky with resin and malt, sticky bitter hops in the finish, strong PNW character but blunted a bit for baser characteristics. The roast and burned notes come through nice and strong but there’s unwanted astringency from more than one source and even a bit of rubber glove in the aftertaste. Not too much of a matter, though, as the rough wood and citrus blend well and accommodate the ash and light berry. Full-bodied but very heavy. Black Sun it’s not, but there’s room for this one, or perhaps a tweaked descendant. [2017.01.27: 3.4]

Had from draft at RRT, very nice, a dark color but not very heavy in taste, a bit sweet but not too much. Not bad aftertaste and overall a good beer

I had it from the can. It’s roasted coffee, smoke, and hops. It’s pretty bitter. It was pretty tasty. GenDV138 (7828) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - JAN 8, 2017
12 oz can shared by a friend, thanks Mike J! Black with light tan head. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, roasty notes. Tastes of roast, light pine, some caramel. Medium body with a dry finish. Pretty good. BeerdedDave (2005) - Beckley, USA - JAN 4, 2017
black color; aroma is a mix of dark, roasted malt and piney hops with fruit and caramel notes; flavor is much the same - dark malt with chocolate and coffee notes with a good deal of piney, citrusy hops with some fruit notes; bitter finish; kind of a mix of a porter and a black IPA Slubgob (345) - West Hartford, USA - JAN 1, 2017
UPDATED: JAN 1, 2017 Drank out of bottle. Coffee, toffee, and pine nose. In the mouth, balance of malt and bracing but not overwhelming hops. Finishes with a bit of malty sweet and blooming one. The effect is a mix of a big brown slew mixed with a restrained IPA. Quite nice.
