An IPA brewed with orange peel could suggest a cross-pollination of styles, but in reality, the orange peel is a perfect companion to this complex IPA. Prominent notes of earth, pine, tea and grapefruit combine with the orange peel and toasty, mildly sweet, caramely malts to create a unique flavor profile in a crowded field, a feat in itself. The intensely aromatic nose is redolent of pine and earth with balanced notes of sweet caramel and leather. Full-bodied on the palate, but this was evident even as the beer was being poured into the glass. Crisp bitterness and a very dry mouthfeel from entry to finish. Dark-amber in color with pristine clarity and an inch-tall head that is light-tan in color and settles to a wide ring over time. Overall, Scurvy is full-flavored yet balanced, a bold IPA.

Rich copper coloured body with a bright amber and orange coloured tint and a nice two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright grassy and citrus hops with some oranges, malt and alcohol noticeable. Medium-bodied; Assertive piney and grapefruity hops with a lot of oranges noticeable and a pungent blood orange bitterness at the end. Aftertaste shows a nice blend of fresh hops, malt, alcohol and a robust citrus and orange flavour with a bit of sweetness. Overall, a very well-made fruited IPA with not too much fruit flavours and still a great level of hoppiness, with a well balanced malt profile. Definitely worth sampling if you can find this! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Binny’s in Chicago (South Loop), Illinois on 21-August-2013 for US$1.67 sampled at home in Washington on 16-January-2014.

Pale copper pour with a thin creamy head and thick striped sticky lacing .... Aroma of citrusy bitter orange peel and light piney hops along with some caramel malt ... taste is very bitter and of citrusy orange hop, some light piney hops, caramel malt, kinda overcarbonated on the mouthfeel end ... Finish is fizzy and dry hopped... Average ipa

UPDATED: AUG 23, 2015 Bottle. Pours clearish copper color with a good finger of off-white head. Aroma is orange citrus & floral hops. Flavor is a bit malty, but the bitter orange citrus and piney hops balance it out well. Nothing out of this world, but it works pretty good.

Deep orange, medium head - not much aroma. Easy drinking, get the orange in the aftertaste - just a average ipa IMO.

Bottled 5/1/12. Old bottle. Poured 8/26/13. Amber color with a thin white head. Aroma is citrus, caramel, pine, grass, fruity. Maltier than it probably should be, but that’s the age on it. Taste is dry, citrus, spicy, bread, orange, peel (really comes through), caramel; finish is pretty subtle, orange peel. Some really nice lacing. Medium carbonation. Mouth feel is wet, slick. At over 15 months old, a good amount of the hops has fallen off. That being said, it’s tasty and even refreshing. Still highly drinkable. Would love to try a fresh one.

Draft at Greenbush Bar. Pours a clear gold with an inch of soft, frothy white head. I had no idea this was brewed with orange peel and my first note is that there’s an underlying orange citrus character that becomes more pronounced as it warms. They get that right for sure. Some perfume notes on the nose. Light-bodied, with a smooth mouthfeel that has soft carbonation and some bitterness on the finish. Nice, refreshing IPA.

Nearly clear copper to hazelnut pour with a 1 finger, off white head. Aroma is sweet fruity and floral citrus, light pine, light grapefruit, toast, caramel, toffee, grass and biscuit. Flavor is deep caramel, some toffee and biscuit up front giving way to hay, planty hops, lots of sweet and bitter citrus, grass, pine, toast and fruity yeast. Medium body, off dry throughout and lightly carbonated. Good stuff, nice example of a complex, but citrus and caramel forward IPA.

Draft. The pour is a faint orange. The aroma is mostly mild hops. The taste I don't much orange from until the very end. A little too bitter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
