COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Carnival comes but once a year - and you can only enjoy Sticke beer at Uerige twice a year. It contains more malt and hops and has a higher alcoholic content than normal Altbier. And our guests appreciate it! In earlier days it used to be whispered hand over mouth that Uerige was serving Sticke again because the master brewer had portioned the ingredients too generously. With today’s fully-automated operation, this could not happen. So Sticke beer is brewed intentionally - and this certainly doesn’t negatively effect either its quality or taste.

The two dates every year are always the same. The third Tuesday in January and October are the two Sticke days.

Drank it side by side with the normal Alt from Uerige. This one is more my style, even if Alt isn’t really my style at all. In any case, this one had more everything which can sometimes backfire, but in this case it made it better. Sweeter but more bitterness, more hop aroma, still a hint of fruitcake or something, but the other bits kinda balance it out. If I ever found myself in Dusseldorf, I would probably drink one or two of these before I started to think about Kölsch.

quite light-colored head, dark brown color, clear, fruity hop-aromas, tastes like a mix of a modern pale ale and the regular altbier-style, also some fruity yeast-flavors i can make out. not my taste. my bottle says alc. 6,0% vol

Aroma is caramel, earthy hops, malt, bready, bitter, slightly metallic. Appearance is brownish red, off white to light tan head, somewhat hazy. Taste is bitter, malt, bready, earthy hops, not as much caramel as I expected, definitely more bitter than sweet. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, bitter malt and earthy hop aftertaste. Overall, this is good but I prefer the Doppel Sticke.

Bottle. Orangey Amber. Very malty (buttery, caramelly). Roasty (burnt sugar). Sour fruit (berries). Earthy, woody flavours. Sweetish leading to dry bittering hop finish. (2008)

Bottle at home. From Wine Rack, West Byfleet. Caramel/grassy aroma but low on the dial. Dark amber, verging on opaque. Creamy if thin off-white head. Light bitter. Develops a citric sourness. Medium bodied. Soft. Carbonation. Dry finish, with a touch of the astringent. Less going on than the standard Alt I just had, but perhaps best described as more refined. A more balanced taste and I prefer the palate. There’s even some warmth in finish from the additional ABV.
