COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Carnival comes but once a year - and you can only enjoy Sticke beer at Uerige twice a year. It contains more malt and hops and has a higher alcoholic content than normal Altbier. And our guests appreciate it! In earlier days it used to be whispered hand over mouth that Uerige was serving Sticke again because the master brewer had portioned the ingredients too generously. With today’s fully-automated operation, this could not happen. So Sticke beer is brewed intentionally - and this certainly doesn’t negatively effect either its quality or taste.

The two dates every year are always the same. The third Tuesday in January and October are the two Sticke days.

This is the second occasion that I have had Zum Uerige Sticke in the bottle. Both were imported to the US. In fact, my beer was dated 10.25 meaning that it was a 2005 bottle. Bloody shame!Needless to say, this beer does not seem to hold up very well in the bottle, especially after one year. The aroma had pronounced notes of prune that must have been from oxidation. The malt presence was considerable as was the hop flavor and bitterness. The balance of the clean flavors begs this to be sampled from its birthplace.

Fruchtige Hopfenaromen und Malz. Der Geschmack ist sehr ausgewogen, fruchtig und malzig. Etwas kratzig und astringierend im Abgang, die starke Bittere kommt erst hinterher.

330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co. Wine & Beer, Glasgow (£4.10):
An interesting one from Uerige & one that was definitely better than their Uerige Alt that I tried last, although it wasn’t exactly miles ahead. The beer had a slightly more hoppy feel to it with some floral touches on top of the caramel sweetness & toffee flavours. There was still some earthy touches with this one as well though & the balance seemed a little better too but I still don’t think it’s a beer that I’ll be running back to again unless I find myself in Düsseldorf at some point; still it was well worth trying & it’s another decent altbier to say I’ve tried.

Scopey (14945) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUL 7, 2017
Bottle from Utobeer. It pours hazy deep brown with a decent off-white head. The aroma is rich malty action, caramel, brown bread, fruit cake, molasses, toffee and toasted nut. The taste is dry, bitter - sweet, rich wood, leather, varnish, spice, resin, touch of spice, earth, toast and fruit cake with a drying and woody finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Good classic example of the style.

Kita (2168) - Koper, SLOVENIA - JUL 4, 2017
Swing top bottle, 0.33l. Cloudy amber brown color with thick creamy tan-like head and soft visible carbonation. Aroma of caramel, flowers, honey, grass and dried fruit. Taste starts with medium sweet caramel and floral, following is grassy, mouthfeel is warming, while finish is moderate bitter. Medium to full body, thick texture and average carbonation in palate. Bon Jovi’s "Stick to your guns" comes on my mind with this one...

More sweet dark malts, dark molasses, while grain bread, medium carbonation, medium to full bodied. Very nice Altbier, rich malts. Bottle from Utobeer, Borough.
