The XIII Anniversary Edition:
Poured from the 12oz bottle(bottled 11/09/06) a clear deep amber bordering on brown with a large head of foam that quickly shrank to a fine layer with some lacing.
The smell has strong notes of malt with a good side note of fruitness.(dark fruit)
The taste has an abundance of semi sweet malt and a touch of plum up front that after a few sips, seems to calm down a bit. Don't do that!
I also get a touch of grain in the flavour as well with some sourness that is most evident in the finish. Weird tasting BWSA that, maybe, could use some aging to refine the flavours because the overall impression I'm getting is that it's a bit rough on the palate.
A few more sips in and the malt makes somewhat of a comeback and its renewed presence is most welcome. Yep. I can see some real potential in this brew so if I happen to get more samples, they're going in my "cellar" for sure. Also, for being almost 10%abv, to me, the alcohol is hidden pretty well.
I'm down to the last 3rd of my glass and the flavours seem to be more balanced and I'm finding it to be a smooth drinker. I *was* going to put a lower score on the drinkability factor but now, it's changing my mind completely. It's funny how a first sip impression can change so much after further tasting but that happens a lot with many brews....;^)
Bottom line: I like this sample from Uinta and I can only hope that they continue to push the envelope. Well done!
Thanks to Wasatch for giving me the chance to tastea BWSA from his great state of Utah!
Edit: XIV Edition, bottled 12/12/2007, tasted 04/17/2010.
A deep clear dark amber pour with a small but looks like stubborn head of offwhite foam. Lacing? You betchya. Score 4.0
Lots of aromas going on; caramel malt, lots of dark fruits with plums sticking out the most, some alcohol. Score 4.5
The taste goes along the lines of the smell with the caramel malt about as good as it can get. The dark fruit nose doesn't shine as well in the taste but is there. Some kind of bitterness on the back end, mainly pine, that grows during the session validating the fact that this is an American Barleywine. Also some alcohol but to a lesser degree than fresher samples of any year I've had. Score 4.0
It's on the low end of medium bodied with lightish carbonation. Score 3.5
Drinkability? A nice sipper of the style. Not *as* drinkable as some of the other BWs I've tried but still good. Score 4.0
XVI, bottled Feb 20, 2009.
Deep and dark red colour, close to 2 fingers head of foam. Smell is all fruity and chock full of caramel malt. Very light bitterness.
The taste is pretty much superb! Caramel maltiness, toffee, some fruitiness, a light but balancing bitterness. Wow, is this good. The alcohol is there but doesn't interfere with drinking. I reckon this ould be the best of the batches. Without changing any of my scores, I'd say it's an A beer for sure and definitely one that benefits from cellaring.

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2017 A reddish copper ale with a thin white head. In mouth, a nice caramel malt with vinous notes, treacle, light butterscotch, alcohol warmth, resinous hops, light oxidation, pleasant and smooth. Bottle bought in Sept 2011. Frothmeister (851) - Ontario, CANADA - MAR 30, 2017
12oz bottle. Pours a lightly hazed garnet with a tan head. On the nose, resinous hops, dark dried fruits, faint molasses, and a very light note of cocoa. Taste wise, sweet and full bodied with a load of resinous hops, lots of sticky dried fruit notes, and light hints of dark coffee that head into toffee, a big whack of resinous hops, faint earthy notes with some molasses, and some mineral bitterness in the long malty resinous finish. In the world of barley wines, this isn’t terribly complex, but it’s SO goddamn tasty, so right now, who cares about complexity! minihame2 (844) - Oulu, FINLAND - MAR 17, 2017
Deep, dark brown colour with some tan lacing. Strong and sweet malty aroma, brown sugar. Taste has medium bitterness, strong malty flavours with some hops. Slight alcohol burn. Medium body with nice mouthfeel. Decent beer overall. VastActiv (8151) - Oulu/Helsinki, FINLAND - MAR 7, 2017
