COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in small batches annually to commemorate Uinta’s anniversary, this soul-warming brew is now available year-round. (Uinta’s anniversary is observed and noted by the change of the roman numeral on the label.) Uinta’s award winning barley wine has a dark amber hue with a rich malty character. Serious amounts of hops are used to balance its hardy alcohol content of over 10% ABV. Originating in England in the nineteenth century, barley wines are brewed with the same traditional ingredients as beer: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. There are no grapes or fruit used in the brewing process. The name “barley wine” refers to its alcohol content being similar to that of most wines, ranging from 8.5% to 14% ABV. Unlike most beers, barley wines age remarkably well. If you have the will power, set an Anniversary Barley Wine aside for a year or more.

Bottle at R.F.D., Washington DC, as XV Anniversary
Mahogany color. Aroma of caramel and old wood, solid. Strong body structure, with very good sweet caramel flavor, not syrupy, and with a strong bitterness. The final is well balanced between medium sweet caramel and the bitterness. Not very complex, but enjoyable.

Thanks to IrishBoy, pours deep burnt caramel with a thin halo of a head. The nose is brown sugar, dried fruits and malty. Very nice. The flavor follows the nose nicely with a touch of heat lingering. A bit creamy on the palate.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 27 Sep 2008. Labeld XV Anniversary Barley Wine) Dark ruby red with lasting pale brown head, leaving lots of lacing. Malty, hoppy nose with notes of pine needles, chocolate nad orange peel. Malty, hoppy taste with chocolate, blood oranges, orange peel, pine needles and resin. Long, hoppy finish. Rather sweet, but balanced by the hops. Medium to full body. Complex. Very tasty and quite brilliant.

15th Anniversary, bottled 7/21/08. Pours with a hazy deep red body, and a small, off-white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is hoppy, tangy with lots of caramel, with some prunes and dark fruits. Taste is very malty, slightly nutty with a slight burnt astringency towards the end. Thick mouthfeel with sharpish bubbles. Might mellow a bit in 3 or 4 years, but the starting product isn’t really promising enough to warrant the wait.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06 under the name of 14th Anniversary. Poured hazy reddish brown color with medium frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Complex dark fruity and roasted brown sugar aroma. Medium sweet dark fruity flavor with a medium to heavy sweet dark fruit finish of moderate duration. Medium body with a sticky texture. Good rich brew.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2014 (Updated rating) Oh how my palate has changed... 12 oz bottle. Brown in color with a good sized beige head. Aroma is of pine, brown sugar, citrus, and slightly herbal. Taste is of citrus, pine, resin, brown sugar, raisin and caramel. Bright hop characteristics make this beer shine. Initial Rating 9/25/08 - 3.5 Deep ruby color with a medium sized beige head. Aroma is of honey, raisins, brown sugar, and alcohol. Flavor is sweet malts and caramel with a bitter hop finish.

bottle, thanks to BBG. muddy caramel color with no head and vey little activity. aroma is lightly peppered alcohol and some rich malt and sugar. flavor is the same, initially sweet and sugary with some peppery alcohol and bitter malt backbone coming in later. not a great example of the style.

Goodgrief (2022) - Middletown, Delaware, USA - SEP 23, 2008
Ruby red pour, no head and just some bubbles for lacing. Nice malty aroma with some dark fruit and raisin. The flavor is a huge malt bomb without being cloying. Caramel, toffee, molasses and some hop tartness at the end. My complaint is that this beer is really undercarbonated and it greatly reminded me of a soda gone flat. Unfortunate.
