Golden Spike Hefeweizen is a traditional, American Style, unfiltered wheat beer. Cloudy and golden-orange in appearance, Golden Spike Hefeweizen is smooth, creamy and often served with a slice of lemon. Golden Spike Hefeweizen was named in honor of the celebrated historic completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the United States. In May 1869 a ceremonial “golden spike” was used at the juncture of two facing locomotives--the Union Pacific No. 119 and Central Pacific No. 60 (better known as the Jupiter). Each locomotive represented the railroad lines laid from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The copper-alloyed gold spike was tapped into a pre-drilled hole and replaced by an ordinary spike soon afterwards. Each of the four sides of the golden spike was engraved, including one inscription that said, “May God continue the unity of our Country, as this Railroad united the two great Oceans of the world.” Interestingly, these particular railroad lines wouldn’t be completed until years later when bridges were completed over various rivers in the east. A coast-to-coast link was completed in 1870 with the extension of the Kansas Pacific Railway. There is as much complexity to history as there is to our beer. Golden Spike Hefeweizen--where yeast meets west.

Tap. Pours quite hazy golden, small white head, decent lacing. Aroma is wheat, grain, lemon. Flavor is light sweet, light bitter, lacing pretty much all trace of what makes a hef a hef. Light body. Boring. Hint of acidity.

Tallahassee, Fl on tap at Momo’s Northside. Hazy, medium golden, snow white head, nice lace. Light banana and cloves in the aroma. Refreshing flavor, some yeasty notes, a touch of lemon, some cloves and banana flavoring. Crisp mouthfeel. Refreshing on a hot autumn day.

Draft. Hazy amber beer with a cream head. Light wheat aroma. Wheat and light malt flavor. Medium bodied. Wheat and light spice lingers.

Poured a slighly hazy light orange color with a large white head. Aroma of oranges and lemon. Slightly skunky. Taste is sweet and crisp with apricot and orange. Very smooth almost creamy with a wheat finish. Slight banana too. Not bad!

Had on tap at a hotel bar. Pours cloudy gold, no head. Some muddled dirt, light nothingness. Very bland, borderline gross.

Draft... Pours hazy and yellow with a large, frothy, white head. Great retention. The nose is fruity, yeasty and lightly spicy with some citrus notes. Light-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and soft carbonation. Lots of buttery diacetyl, sweet grains and yeastiness in the flavor. Not so good.

Bottle from Cork 57. Hazy golden body with medium head. Nose is sweet, grassy, honey. Taste is lots of hops, some lemonade tastes, lots of hops. Prickly texture. Quite nice.

brokensail (16486) - Dublin, California, USA - AUG 18, 2015
On tap @ Uinta. Hazed golden orange pour with white foam. Pretty heavy on the cereal and grainy character. Minimal banana, some cracker, and a bit of dough. Sort of watery and thin. Mild orange zest in there and a hint of pie crust.

jcos (1851) - Maryland, USA - JUL 9, 2015
