Late in the 18th century Britains great brewing families were working hard to break into new markets. For the Baltic Sea ports they created an export version of the traditional British Porter. Styled like an IPA to preserve them for the voyage, those profound Baltic Porters served to ward off the chill winds of that northern sea. That said, we werent satisfied with the Baltic Porters traditionally subtle hint of black licorice. This ale features a blend of whole licorice root and star anise to create an uncommon addition to that traditional export Porters hearty character.

I was taken a little aback by this beer. Poured out nice and dark with a tan head. A lot of herbal notes on the nose and it finished nice and smooth.

Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a black color with an enormous foamy dark brown head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma was port wine, anise, cherry cola and cracker. The flavor was bitter and roasty with moderate chocolate, coffee, port wine, cherry cola and anise. Long bitter, dryish and roasty finish with lingering cocoa, coffee and port wine. Medium body. Solid.
