Inspired by the great Belgian brewing tradition of Trappist monks established over the centuries, Unibroue 17 was first brewed in 2007 to celebrate our brewery’s 17th anniversary. However, the overwhelming success of this specialty brew made it obvious that we could not let such a great ale slip into the anonymity of retirement.

As testimony to its remarkable flair profile which increases in complexity as it ages, the original batch bottled in 2007 was awarded an international platinum medal three years in a row, and the prestigious title of "World’s Best Dark Ale" when it was well past three years in the bottle!

So in 2011, we proudly brought back this French Oak aged, bottle refermented dark ale, with the "Grande Réserve" appellation as a fitting endorsement of it’s exceptional quality for aging. Brewed only once a year, in limited quantities, and individually numbered "brasseur" bottles, this is truly a flavorful delight for the specialty beer enthusiast.

Pours dark brown with highly carbed off white head very tight. Aroma mixed fruit and sugars. Taste very much going on, alchohol...dark fruit and caramel...not bad dark strong.

0.75 litre bottle (2014 #22496, BB 2nd Dec 19): drank on 30th Oct 2017 at the monthly beer exchange in Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. I bought this in California and brought it home to share with friends. Really enjoyed it, the last beer of the evening. Dark brown body, wispy off-white head. Nose is malty with chocolate notes dominating, light spice esters as the beer warmed a little in the glass. Lovely malty brew, again with chocolate to the fore in the taste, with a spicy twist, like the aroma, some dried fruits in there too (prunes, raisins, figs). Liked it.

75cl bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Oct 17 Part 2, courtesy of Jeremy. Many thanks! Pours dark brown, thin off-white head. Aroma has some nice soft chocolate, dark malts, light spice. Taste has prominent spice, dark treacle, dried dark fruits. Good rich oak aged quadrupel and nice end to the evening.

I wasn't sure if I would keep this one for a special occasion. I decided to finally open it up. Makes me think of La Trappe Triple (my go to beer). Success!

Tiny pour from a bottle at a tasting. Consumed on 9-23-17. Labeled as "Unibroue Grand Reserve 17." Light brown. Hazy liquid. Raisin and caramel scents. Juicy aroma. A bit chemical, prune-like, plastic, yeasty taste. Medium body. Frothy in the palate.>2.9

Quite an understated taste for such a style, but a delicious taste at that. Well-balanced toffee, malt, wood, caramel, and raisins. Not too watery and not too thick. Unibroue comes through strong once again.

UPDATED: MAY 5, 2017 Purchased at LCBO in 750ml bottle for about $10. Nice beer. Fantastic for the Belgian style of beer. Can easily not notice it’s as strong as 10% ABV.

Bottled at Clubhouse BFD event. Pours dark, tan head. Aroma is Belgian spice, esters, cinnamon, nutmeg, raisin, fig, plum, sweet. Flavor is raisin, plum, fig. Sweet dark fruit. Very sweet.

Dark brown pour, finger of tan head. Nose is dark malt and spice. Bittersweet. Middle is coco, currants, nutmeg, charged malt. Finish is warm and bittersweet.
