COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

On tap at Blue Monk. Pours mahogany amber with small off white head that reduces to a light cap. Nose of burnt sugar, toffee, yeast and clove. Taste adds the presense of green apple. Clove spice more evident as it warms. Good strong medium body.

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2017 Big, rich Belgian Strong Ale, complex and ever-changing as it warms. Pours a deep, dark mahogany red-brown with a massive beige head and decent lacing. Nose offers plenty of yeasty esters, bread and clove on top of red apples. Taste is just as diverse, starting with a semisweet hint of dough and clove, then giving up a melange of overripe fruits, apples and bananas and peaches all tinged with the slightest toffee caramel sweetness. Finishes dark and clingy, yet the booze never comes into play. (Probably helps this bottle is at least two years old.) Wasn’t expecting this beer to be as delectable as it is, but, hell, it’s pretty tasty.

Laid back spicy fruit aroma in a copper pour. Similar spicy fruit body with a hint of banana and bubblegum. Pretty much what you want from a Belgian Dubbel.

5/29/17 (Chicago, IL). 12 oz bottle poured into tulip. Cloudy copper brown pour, very generous white cloudy head. Spicy, bread, malt and yeast aroma. Taste included malt, bread, yeast, caramel, fruit and spices. Mild carbonation, feel smooth and creamy, good mouth feel and easy going down. Very good offering by Unibroue!

UPDATED: MAY 25, 2017 Very subtle aroma, though I’ll admit I was congested while drinking this. Complex tastes of caramel and malt. Not overly sweet at all. Slightly bitter, smoothly carbonated finish. Very clean dubbel from a consistently great brewery.

And oldie but a goodie. Dark, murky orange pour with a creamy off-white head. Caramel, dark fruit, Belgian yeast. Good stuff.

Clean and carbonated. Has a champagne feel. Very balanced but flavor doesn’t pop. Reviewed - A Brew With You, Ep. 34

From old tasting notes. Cloudy Amber orange color. Thick, rocky beige head. Sharp, yeasty, spicy malt nose. Interesting soft, silky sweet toasted malt flavor hints at peppercorns and currants. Bittersweet finish with a cloying malty aftertaste.

Originally rated on 12/20/2008. Maudite pours a deep brown body with a good mid sized cap that left some good lace. Flavor and aromas of dark sweet fruits like cherries, plum, raisin, and slight citrus hints. went down nice and smooth, not my favorite from the unibroue company, but a good brew none the less

Smells amazing - almost as good as Rochefort 10. Taste is disappointing by Rochefort standards, but still very good - starts out with caramel, then moves into a subtle spiciness, then ends on a mildly tannic note. This is a very good beer, but it isn’t Rochefort 10, which the initial aroma got me hoping for before I even took a sip.

On tap at Das Biergarten. Hazy amber body. Smells bready, sweet caramel malts, strong and fruity yeast aromas. Tastes of bready, sweet malts, red apples, banana, spice, and a sharp yeasty back end. Medium bodied. Dry, so it doesn’t feel that heavy. Excellent, as always.
