In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Poured a hazy honey brown with champagne effervescence. Thin sudsy head that lasted down to a cap, soapy lacing. Aromatic and exotic. Complex with lots of Belgian yeast dominant. Thick fruits and a little spice. The sweet malt in the background comes to the nose like temptation. The hops are revealed on the palate floral and herbal. The malt is especially deep and full. Peaks smoothly with moderate carbonation and devilishly plays tricks in the glass with a slight reddish tint. Not too heavy to enjoy and lightly boozy at 8%. Its demure but not afraid. What a wonderful way to keep your eyes on heaven.

Smells amazing - almost as good as Rochefort 10. Taste is disappointing by Rochefort standards, but still very good - starts out with caramel, then moves into a subtle spiciness, then ends on a mildly tannic note. This is a very good beer, but it isnt Rochefort 10, which the initial aroma got me hoping for before I even took a sip.

On tap at Das Biergarten. Hazy amber body. Smells bready, sweet caramel malts, strong and fruity yeast aromas. Tastes of bready, sweet malts, red apples, banana, spice, and a sharp yeasty back end. Medium bodied. Dry, so it doesnt feel that heavy. Excellent, as always.

From Saveur Biere. In La Trappe chalice. Watching Los Soprano 6x03. Caramel with a pleasant effervescence and a nice warming feeling. A good dubbel but not something amazing like their tripel

341ml bottle. Minimally cloudy, darkest amber to mahogany colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Fruity, yeasty aroma has notes of pear, hints of yellow apple, a touch of raisin, sweet-ish wheaty and oaty background. Taste is moderately sweet, yeasty fruity, notes of pear, hints of yellow apple, a touch of raisin, some peppery yeasty spiciness; minimally overcarbonated.

Best by 05/19/19. Pours dark murky red/copper color, off-white head. Aroma is plum, fig, cherry, caramel, maybe some Belgian esters, a little cinnamon, slightly oxidized, prune. Nice dubbel notes without being too much. Flavor is caramel, fig, dark fruit, mild Belgian spices. Not too estery (which is good), prune. Like every beer Ive had from Unibroue, especially in this variety pack, its overly effervescent, but still one of the better ones Ive had from them.

Dark orange pour with a white head and medium lacing. As the banana esters one expects in a Belgian. Clears the palate well with a bit of bitterness and a bit of astringency. The alcohol is not really noticeable in the flavors, but the after affects are felt!

Murky brownish color with off-white head. Aroma has mostly brown sugar and belgian yeast with a hint of dried fruits. Taste is quite balanced, slightly sweet at first but balances out towards the finish. Medium to light body, medium carbonation. Overall its a tasty, well balanced belgian ale.

Another Belgian-style from Unibroue who I think a lot of. First time to pour out of a bomber into my favorite glass, a Chimay trappist. Be careful to pour slowly because it billows out a large off-white head of foam that is a great lacer. Its color is a dark golden-amber. The scent is truly enticing, fruity, mango mostly, and hard candy. The taste is fairly straightforward, malty, dark fruit, perhaps a bit of biscuit. Not near as complex as Trois Pistoles, a personal favorite from the brewer, but still fine.

hmm, Ive had this one a number of times before and quite enjoyed it, but unfortunately the one I got to taste for this rating seems to have been skunked or something cause it wasnt quite right. Still, Im gonna be a little more generous with the points than I would otherwise because this seems more like a fluke than anything. The smell is surprisingly wheaty and sour. The color is still a nice dark amber. The flavor was a little flatter than normal, still belgiany yeast vibe, but very smooth and creamy. The palate was still good, solid mouthfeel, etc. Overall, this has never been my fave from Unibroue, but Ive always liked it a lot and I hope that next time I buy one, its more in the 4+ range I remember it being in.
