COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In November 1992 Maudite (the damned one), was the first strong beer to be distributed in Quebec grocery stores. Maudite is a mahogany-colored, rich-tasting premium beer that has a distinctive, complex taste. Because of the warmth it releases, this strong character beer must be served cool but not cold. Perfect with pasta, red meats, stews and spicy dishes, it also makes a good aperitif and after-dinner drink.
Maudite has a typically Quebecois name that is reminiscent of the legend of the Chasse-Galerie (the legend of the Flying Canoe). Legend has it that a group of lumberjacks struck a deal with the devil to fly home in their canoes, guided by Satan himself, to make it home in time for Christmas.
Gold medal winner in 1995 and 1996 and the Chicago Beverage Tasting Institute.

Pours a cloudy amber with a beige head. Slightly sweet on the nose. Smooth into the mouth with a sweet/spiced swallow. Very little bitterness. Nice crisp finish/aftertaste. Tastes a bit like a brown ale to me, it more complex with a smooth delivery, but not heavy. Very good. Will have again.

12 oz bottle. Mostly opaque chestnut color. Significant visible carbonation. Off white head that is replenished by carbonation. Aroma is prune, yeast, earth, raisin, and spices. Brew is somewhat spicy, herbal. Flavors are yeast, overripe banana, wet leaves, toffee, and raisins. Medium body that is pretty dry. Some alcohol in a clean finish.

Got this one from the 6 pack around Easter. The alcohol is a bit too overwhelming. Not bad overall.

This is perhaps the best Belgian-style strong dark ale produced in Canada. Amazing taste, you won't be disappointed! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Ar: Fig, plum, and Christmas-spiced banana; some peachy sweetness. Ap: Deep amber and cloudy; small off-white head, recedes into a thin cap of foam. T: Bright banana, juicy peach, plums, and treacle; toasty-sweet melanoidins; cloves, black pepper, and cinnamon; medium-low bitterness, a slightly herbal flavor; finish is peach skins, cloves, and apricot. P: Medium body with very high carbonation; finish is dry. O: A very solid beer; great mixture of fruit, malt, and cooked-sugar flavors; nice mouthfeel, very firm and rich without being cloying; delicious!

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2017 Big, rich Belgian Strong Ale, complex and ever-changing as it warms. Pours a deep, dark mahogany red-brown with a massive beige head and decent lacing. Nose offers plenty of yeasty esters, bread and clove on top of red apples. Taste is just as diverse, starting with a semisweet hint of dough and clove, then giving up a melange of overripe fruits, apples and bananas and peaches all tinged with the slightest toffee caramel sweetness. Finishes dark and clingy, yet the booze never comes into play. (Probably helps this bottle is at least two years old.) Wasn’t expecting this beer to be as delectable as it is, but, hell, it’s pretty tasty.

Laid back spicy fruit aroma in a copper pour. Similar spicy fruit body with a hint of banana and bubblegum. Pretty much what you want from a Belgian Dubbel.

5/29/17 (Chicago, IL). 12 oz bottle poured into tulip. Cloudy copper brown pour, very generous white cloudy head. Spicy, bread, malt and yeast aroma. Taste included malt, bread, yeast, caramel, fruit and spices. Mild carbonation, feel smooth and creamy, good mouth feel and easy going down. Very good offering by Unibroue!

erikaraeb (252) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - MAY 23, 2017
UPDATED: MAY 25, 2017 Very subtle aroma, though I’ll admit I was congested while drinking this. Complex tastes of caramel and malt. Not overly sweet at all. Slightly bitter, smoothly carbonated finish. Very clean dubbel from a consistently great brewery.

And oldie but a goodie. Dark, murky orange pour with a creamy off-white head. Caramel, dark fruit, Belgian yeast. Good stuff.
