Cant taste the hops in thisone on draft. IT is pure roasted malt, like a super roasted porter. ContemplateBeer (2089) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - FEB 2, 2013
Aroma of cocoa with some light resiny hops. Appearance is opaque black with light mocha head. Flavor matches the nose, but with a bit more resin. The finish is somewhat dry. Palate is medium, slick and soft. Mediocre for the style. bagalagalaga (161) - Indiana, USA - JAN 22, 2013
Ok, they are right about the blackness, it’s pretty black. Smells hoppy like a pale ale. As you’re drinking it, there is some maltiness, but with hops relentlessly battling for supremacy. The aftertaste is major hops with a bit of a smokey residue. DrSilverworm (9671) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JAN 20, 2013
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2014 12oz bottle, bottled November 2012. Black color. Good thin half-finger brown head. Good lace. Toasty, herbal hop nose. Medium body. Light carbonation. Kinda watery texture. Good roastiness, some light milk chocolate. Herbal, lightly earthy hop. Mostly sweet taste, light bitter aftertaste. Odd Black IPA. Strange watery character, and odd herbal flavor, but still hoppy, chocolatey, and roasty.. Still a black IPA.. just not my favorite example 7/4/6/2/12b3shine (8940) - Indiana, USA - JAN 6, 2013
Re-rate, 1/12/14: 12oz bottle, bottled November 2013. Why are these always 2 months old when they show up? Pours a black color, with a nice thicker brown head. Leaves good, thicker full sheets of lace. Earthy hop, and pine in the nose. Some chocolate in the aroma, light roast. A bit of that floral, tea like herbal quality that I presume comes from the lavender. An interesting, and noticeable twist on the black IPA, that takes it in a different, unique direction from the type that I normally like, though it’s not really bad, it kind of works. Medium to bigger body, chewier than I remember this being last year, that’s a good thing. Soft carbonation, kind of a slick, sticky texture. Moderate bitter taste, light sweet. A satisfying black IPA... I enjoyed this significantly more than the bottle I tried last year.
Draft to taster. Looks good; pitch black with foamy beige head. Smells and tastes malty and hoppy (in that order) with some roastiness. Good on the palate. A good example of the style.

12oz bottle - pours black with nice beige head and great lacing. Nose is chocolate and light spruce. Flavor adds roasted malts and coffee. Light sweet with stronger bitterness. Dry finish with roasty aftertaste. Smooth and medium to full body. Definitely liking the style more and more. Usually overlook the brewer, but I’ll keep an eye out now. roasted malts, dry, nice aroma.
flavor is roasted malts, stoutish, faint flowery balance, low on the hops for a black ipa.
