COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Komodo Dragonfly Black IPA is a well-balanced, dark, bitter, and totally unique beer experience. We brewed this IPA with a base of fresh Pilsner Malts and darkened the color with pure Black Malts, creating a clean malt character that allows the liberal hop additions to shine through. Komodo is dry hopped and aged with a pinch of lavender to add to the overall aromatic experience.

Pours black with with a full, creamy, reddish tan head. It looks great. Aroma has roasted malts, pine, coffee, mild chocolate, and subtle grapefruit. The taste is heavy in pine that is balanced well with a roasted coffee taste. There is some smokiness in here, while I also find some light citrus undertones of grapefruit. Long roasted aftertaste. Medium in body, while having a more thick texture, with a good amount of carbonation. This is a solid beer, especially if you enjoy this style.

Bottle. Pours black with little ruby highlights with nose tan head and lacing. Nose is big floral hops and little roast. Taste is nice and hoppy with some roast and chocolate. Lasting bitterness in the aftertaste. Definitely balanced toward the hops. Nice black IPA.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2010 On draft at the brewery. Roasted and citrus nose below a dark brown head. Taste I balanced roast and citrus notes. Nice bitterness and smooth mouthfeel and creamy. Such a really nice beer. One of the best IBAs I’ve had.

12oz bottle. Pours a really dark and viscous with a tan head. Dusty dry cocoa, coffee, light nuttiness...not much in the way of hops. Thick mouth feel. Dusty bitter chocolate, inky, some light grassy earthiness in there and then a really bitter finish. Confusing beer.

Bottle. Black pour with a small tan head. Dark malt, hops, roasted coffee and chocolate in the aroma and taste. Almost as much of a hoppy porter/stout than an black IPA. Very good beer.

Beautiful pour. Black with a frothy head. Aroma is of roasted malt. It’s taste is a little too dry for me. Not much sweetness but the hops come through at the end.

aroma is good general roast and bakers chocolate. appearance is opaque with filthy head of good size but less retention and some lacing. flavor is excellent balance of roast softness with some java notes and plenty of unsweetened cocoa - up against bracing bitterness with buried citrus and hint of pine. this is not an IPA nor black IPA (nor does that style even exist, arguably), this is simply a well structured and fun porter.

perfect example of why i dont like this style. just doesnt work together, almst tastes like a decent ipa, then almost like a decent porter, then just falls flat and makes you not even want another sip. astringent, hot, roasty, yuck.
