12oz bottle pours black with darkish tan head that lingered for awhile the aroma of hops and an almost sweet malt. the flavor is pretty much it...the bitterness of the hops and that sweet/roasted malt character blends very well together. really a decent beer. Pours pitch black with a fully receding mocha head. Notes of chocolate, toffee, citrus, pine, herbs and vegetable. Medium to full bodied with moderate resins and lively carbonation. ContemplateBeer (2089) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - FEB 2, 2013
Aroma of cocoa with some light resiny hops. Appearance is opaque black with light mocha head. Flavor matches the nose, but with a bit more resin. The finish is somewhat dry. Palate is medium, slick and soft. Mediocre for the style. DalzAle (2038) - Eden Prairie, Minnesota, USA - MAY 2, 2010
Bottle bonus thanks to Stfun! Dark black pour, tons of carbonation and a slightly hoppy aroma. Flavor starts with dry roasted malts, coffee, smoke and slightly herbal on the finish. Very enjoyable and unique beer, worth trading for in my opinion. bluejacket74 (1995) - Reynoldsburg, Ohio, USA - JUL 1, 2011
12 ounce bottle, bottled in December 2010 so I know it’s not exactly fresh. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with an inch frothy tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. At this point, the aroma seems more like a slightly hoppy porter now, not that it’s a bad thing. The brew smells like roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and some piney hops. The hops do come out a little more in the taste. It tastes like pine hops, roasted and burnt/charred malt, chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit sticky with moderate carbonation. I think it’s a good brew, although I would like to try a fresher bottle of this in the future. Definitely worth trying, I liked it.

12 oz bottle from a coworker. Poured dark brown with ruddy hues...very small beige head. Looks and acts like a porter but still has that IPA background. Aroma of sweet smoky chocolate malts and hints of hops. Simple yet very palatable. This drinks easy and smooth a taste of smokey and roasted malt. Clear your mind about this being an IPA. This black IPA isn’t my first but sure has changed my preception of what black IPAs are. tjthresh (1875) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - FEB 19, 2010
Growler form the tap room in Indy. This is another in a long line of so so attempts. Really way more stoutish that anything. Seems to highlight roast more than hops. GranvilleTim (1857) - Granville, Illinois, USA - AUG 9, 2013
Dark pour with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, little spice. Taste is roasted malt, little bitter chocolate, hops are hardly noticeable. Nice dry roasted malt aftertaste. Nice lacing. LtDan (1806) - Los Angeles County, California, USA - JAN 21, 2010
Number One Snitches!!
Appearance: As I was pouring this in my pint glass, it totally reminded me of pouring a can of Oskar Blues Ten Fidy. It really looked like motor oil. Atop lies a thin tan cap of suds.
Aroma: Big roasty notes, like a dry stout or porter and a little bit of citrus.
Taste: A mouthful of coffee and dark burnt malts, piney bitter hops and citrus zest in the finish. The roast and burnt malts dominates the flavor for me. Please don’t be grossed out, but when I burp, I get that hop profile that is dominated initially by the malt bill.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, moderately carbonated.
Overall: If you take the name IPA off of the beer, and just worry about what it tastes, looks, and smells like, you have a champion. As far as Black IPAs, this was more black and less IPA than others I have tried. GMCC2181 (1613) - Newark, Delaware, USA - FEB 18, 2010
Bottle shared with wolf... sent by stfun. Poured into a pint glass, big head, nice dark chocolate color. Doesnt smell hoppy...lots of roasted malts. Taste is lots of roasted malts with some hops... wouldnt really consider it a "IPA". Just a nice stout with a good amount of hops, lost of roasted malts, light coffee and chocolate. Smooth creamy texture.. Nice brew. Thanks Josh!
