perfect example of why i dont like this style. just doesnt work together, almst tastes like a decent ipa, then almost like a decent porter, then just falls flat and makes you not even want another sip. astringent, hot, roasty, yuck. hombrepalo (1971) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 2, 2010
12 oz bottle from a coworker. Poured dark brown with ruddy hues...very small beige head. Looks and acts like a porter but still has that IPA background. Aroma of sweet smoky chocolate malts and hints of hops. Simple yet very palatable. This drinks easy and smooth a taste of smokey and roasted malt. Clear your mind about this being an IPA. This black IPA isn’t my first but sure has changed my preception of what black IPAs are. tmongoose (2504) - Louisville, Kentucky, USA - DEC 20, 2011
12oz bottle pours black with darkish tan head that lingered for awhile the aroma of hops and an almost sweet malt. the flavor is pretty much it...the bitterness of the hops and that sweet/roasted malt character blends very well together. really a decent beer. crossovert (13724) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - FEB 16, 2013
Cant taste the hops in thisone on draft. IT is pure roasted malt, like a super roasted porter. swigswthwolves (74) - Michigan City, Indiana, USA - FEB 23, 2013
Really cool to see a black ipa from upland on the shelf for under ten bucks. Not at all what I expected though. Aroma is heavy with roasted malts. Pour is jet black with a medium brown top. Taste is very malty with hints of chocolate and nuts. Palate is average. Overall it’s good but less of an ipa and more of a nut brown.

Sampled at the ’13 Cincy Beerfest. Dark beer with a thin tan head. Dusty grain and hop pellet nose. Flavors of hop resin and pine over sweet caramel and coarse bread. Some roasted grain and burnt toast. The finish has some brunt caramel and grapefruit pith. jkwood04 (5463) - Connecticut, USA - OCT 14, 2013
12oz bottle in a shaker. Pours black with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of floral and lightly citrusy hops, some pale and dark malts, a little lavender, and some dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend of everything. Average texture. A good black IPA, but I’m not sure how fresh this bottle was. stoutgap (64) - Indiana, USA - MAY 31, 2014
Bottle to glass, average creamy, light brown head, with fair lacing. Aroma of coffee and grassy hops.Medium body but some what thin. This beer has a fairly long bitter finish that is pleasing but perhaps a bit tomuch dark malt. sturmthis (1149) - Bavaria, GERMANY - JUN 7, 2014
