COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
No season is as synonymous with beer as autumn, when the most storied beer festival of them all, Oktoberfest, takes place in Munich, Germany. Since 1810, this celebration of good food, good company, and, most importantly, good beer, has most prominently featured Marzen-style lager–so much so that many refer to the beer simply as Oktoberfest. Our Oktoberfest is a traditional Bavarian lager featuring all-German malts and rare German hops. This dedication to authenticity produces a beer that would be as at home in Munich as it is here in the Midwest United States. The aroma is authentic, the taste sweet and malty, and the finish crisp and hoppy; perfect for a beautiful fall day!

Got this one in a 6 pack, and it was fresh. Maybe not the best beer of this style, but quite drinkable. At 6.7%, it can sneak up on you if you’re not used to drinking a 12 pack daily. For the ABV, it is very smooth. I liked this one quite a bit

Lack of taste. Amber in color. Lack of malt. Small white head. Little taste of bread. Not good. Upland brewing company should stick with their sours.

Shared from 12oz brown bottle into nonic half-pint glasses. It poured a clear copper colour with sudsy beige foam, long-lasting with lace. Malty, nutty, toasty, starts good but then some unpleasant corny, metallic, medicinal traits creep in, with a hint of diacetyl. Medium body and carbonation. The flaws persisted into the aftertaste. I can tell the authentic German Oktoberfest they’re going for, it’s too bad it didn’t work out.

12 ounce bottle from Woodman’s Menomenee Falls, 9/3/16. Clear copper, large foamy tan head. Average retention. Aroma of caramel malt and a hint of stone fruit. The taste is caramel malt, earthy hops and a bit of fruitiness. Medium bodied, well balanced.

TAR (2787) - Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA - OCT 25, 2016
Clear orange in color. Uniform white foam shows quality retention. Subdued, but mostly clean, nose of pepper, toasted bread, flowers, and honeyed biscuit. Vigorous swirl (at the end of the glass) unveils concrete and fusel alcohol (hairspray). Fluffy carbonation, though a swoosh test shows some foamy residue as it expands. Softly flowery and oily Hallertau comprises the initial sip, trailed by nutty Munich and a splash of honeylike residuals. Fairly clean, though minimally snappy, and a light note of DMS plagues things ever so slightly with a bit of fuzziness. Alcohol is nary a factor as it supplies a very mild sting which renews the palate and harmonizes with the spicy hop touches. Plush hay and a baguette fullness testify to the competent malt extraction. Beefy Munich reveals a toffee crispness beneath the pils malt. Lemony-floral notions clean up the subtle DMS and reveal a smidgeon of snappy lager yeast in its wake. Shades of grass and spice emerge in the well-balanced finish, as a soft bedding of toasted bread, hay and crisp nuts linger. I’m surprised to find this to be mostly defect-free and pleasant. At these silly ABV levels, I was expecting a sloppy Americanized heller bock with oppressive sugars and alcohol, but the alcohol is barely noticeable in the flavor and the balance has been nicely achieved. The few blemishes here are forgivable, considering how subtle they are. A bit more snap to the body and some slightly firmer maltiness would elevate this to another level. Promising.

12 ounce bottle from Woodman’s on Gammon Road in Madison, consumed cold in a Fitger’s pint glass. A modest near-white head decays slowly atop a slightly foggy or oily amber body...some decent caramel malts in the nose, but also a touch of ammonia (just a touch), and as it warms more, a bit of dry herbal/floral tone...body is right in the middle, sweetness-wise for the style, with lightly toasty malts edging into a significantly drier and somewhat smoky finish; there’s also a touch of unwelcome acidity here, something like sour apple - light but not entirely ignorable...body is average in fullness, somewhat low on carbonation. Ehh, this is going to come out a little below the bar for my yearly Oktoberfest round-up.

DRAFT at Pasta Bowl in Chicago. Pours a darker orange....small head. Nose is carmel and yeast; sweet / caramel taste...excellent. Smooth end...excellent Marzen. Its a beautiful time of the year!
