750ml bottle. Hazy medium brown pour with a small off-white head leaving swirls. Nice tart aroma of caramel, spices, wild yeast, and oak. The flavor is medium sour with dark fruit, leather, oak, nutmeg, and vinegar. Interesting. Medium-bodied with good acidity and medium carbonation. Great beer. How: Bottle 750ml from the first an only batch so far. Consumed approximately 4 months after it was bottled. Bottle sent to me by mcberko, thanks a lot Matt. Drank side-by-side with a bottle of first Late Harvest (Batch 1).
The look: Deep mahogany-ruby body topped by a medium beige head with medium retention leaving good lacings on the glass
In long: Nose is a moderately spicy, fruity, a bit oaky and a bit wild. Taste is crunchy cookies, pie crust, blackcurrants, blackberries, hot spices, lots of tannins, oaky vinous notes, minty notes. I compared the first Upright Late Harvest to a unsweetened cherry pie. The Batch 2 starts a bit like some kind of spicy blackberry pie but unlike the batch 1 the barrels and tannins are so strong that it feels a lot more sour and acidic than the batch 1. The Late Harvest Batch 2 is a sipper, unlike the batch 1 which was borderline sessionnable. Both are good, but Batch 1 was just more fun to me. I opened both the first Late Harverst and the Late Harvest Batch 2 at the same time. I don’t mean to brag but I’m getting very good at opening beer bottles without blowing a circuit breaker.
750ml bottle with a few months of age on it. The body is an extremely dark plummy-chestnut color. A thick head of light khaki froth sits steadfast at the head, shrinking slowly but never fully collapsing. Rounded spots and splotches of lace dot the glass. The nose is malty, spicy, and acetic all at once. Rye and chocolate make for strange bedfellows, showing notes of roasted round sweetness and bright, spicy grain. White and pink peppercorns lend a prominent, spicy dust, while vinous oak imparts sharp, tannic grape skins and vanilla. There’s even a subtle hint of unexpected anise within. Flavors are quite sour and zesty, displaying the intense character of a malt vinegar, with backup notes of chocolate and rye. Pepper is again very dusty and earthy, a compliment to the buggy oak and soured fruit skins. It’s intensely vinous overall, drawing a ton of character from the Pinot barrels. I get a bit of Fantôme-esque (only cleaner) minty character from the yeast, adding yet another twist. The palate is medium bodied, with intense, zippy carbonation and a finish that moves from tacky to dry and puckering in a flash. The contrast between intense liveliness and papery oxidation is a bit much for my liking. Overall, it’s an incredibly complex, imaginative beer, but the acetic character, heavy handed spicing, and over-the-top intensity of the body are excessive. Like the Batch 1, this is not amongst my very favorite Upright beers, but it is still very much worth a try. 5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - MAY 1, 2011
Bottle:   Deep caramel, a little muddy, moderate to large light beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Funky floral barnish nose.   Smells great!   Wow, that is really aromatic!   Seems to also have a little Brett to it as well.   Tart, a bit fruity, floral, funky, barnish, musty, this is good!   Slighty dry.   This one is easy to sip, not overly tart nor dry.   Very smooth, full of flavor.   Really impressed with this one.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full, even a little spritzy.   Has a spicy finish, very fall like, similar to some Autumn spiced candles I have smelled.   Wow!   Probably one of the better Uprights I have had yet!   Tart unripened fruitiness lingers.

750 ml bottle; batch 2; pours clear dark brown with fluffy white head; fresh fruit, dry spice, oak, coriander and nutmeg; some chocolate and a little sour barrel notes too; thin body with dry cola, chocolate and very mild funky note of orange peel and stale lemons; much more fruity and spicy funk on the nose than comes through flavor-wise; texture and body is very thin; lots of oaky dryness, light vinegar and dry pepper; lack of body in barrel aged beers sometimes really bothers me and it is definitely is an issue here adrian910ss (2590) - Doylestown, PA, USA - FEB 7, 2011
Sample from a growler courtesy of Matt Capone and Bill. Pours a dark brown maple color with a mahogany tint to it and a small cream colored head. 750mL bottle, pours murky copper. Aroma of sour fruits, oak, vanilla, rye and slight bourbon. Flavour is more sour fruits dominated, with oak, vanilla and rye coming in underneath. Sour, acidic finish. Quite good.

On tap at The Alibi Room’s 200th beer menu event, split with manuchampions, pours dark brown with a reddish hue. Aroma of sour fruits, oak, and vanilla. Flavour is quite potent, though not overburdening sourness upfront, with oak, bourbon, vanilla and wood that follow. About as good as the regular Late Harvest.
