"Note to self: Pear Wood has no pear. This was a lighter than expected smoked lager, clean and crisp, and subtle throughout. Was hoping for more oomph, but it was decent." fiulijn (21019) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JAN 28, 2013
Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouvertroopie (2415) - Munchen an der Willamette, Oregon, USA - JAN 19, 2013
Dark mahogany color with small beige head. Light aroma, some caramel and very light smoke; more valuable for being delicate than powerful. Some caramel flavor, with an impression of pond water and soil; light residual sweetness, and just a shade of smoke; quite strong bitterness.
Pleasant, solid; but not distinctive.
Reddish brown pour. Smoky flavour, smoky aroma with a malt bit. Red pour with a thin white head. Malty flavour and finish. Lots of smoke in this. They really tried to make this a soft gentle beer, and succeeded CheersMate (1343) - Portland (Sellhood), Oregon, USA - DEC 28, 2012
Growler fill from Bambino’s pizza in Seattle. This place actually has a great draught selection, so I encourage everyone to check it out. Decent dark brown appearance. The translucent brown appearance is quite fitting here. This has a relatively pungent, smokey aroma. The wood aroma is quite noticeable and pleasing. It has an almost nutty aroma to it, too. Light, refreshing touch on the palate. Very pleasing this time of year, and in the summer. Hell, light and refreshing is pleasing anytime of the year. Strong smoke and wood flavor, at first, but then an odd, funky flavor hits my the back of my throat. Not really sure what’s going on with that, but it’s a bit disctracting. At times I feel it’s a little more dense on the tongue than it needs to be, but this is a great beer. beersearcher (2382) - Glendale, California, USA - DEC 6, 2012
A solid effort from this black hued lager. Maybe I was led astray by the name but I did not get much wood or smoke notes. Just a solid malty lager.

On tap at the tasting room in Portland, OR. Pours a clear, brown-amber colored body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is somewhat smokey with a light, bready sweetness. Touches of chocolate, wood, and fruity esters. Flavor is similar. Lightly smoked and woody with a bready malt backing. Touches of chocolate, a few fruity esters, and some grains. Finishes clean, mostly dry, somewhat smokey, and balanced with a light malt sweetness. Length aftertaste following a medium body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a pretty solid rauchbier. Clean, lightly smoked, grainy, and woody that is balanced nicely with a light malt sweetness and a few hints of fruity esters. Nice beer. pdx77 (1484) - Oregon, USA - NOV 30, 2012
On draught at Roscoe’s Holiday Summit. Good rauchbier with not too much smoke, smooth with a taste of charcoal and sweet BBQ. boFNjackson (4201) - Portland, Oregon, USA - NOV 13, 2012
Tap @ Grain and Gristle... A deep red/maroon cloudy pour with a thin, off-white head. Not much smoke here. Added some dense wood and sweetness but nothing coming off as something with smoke. Even when looking hard for it it was faint. That said, this was a good lager. Clean, earthy, nice malt sweetness and grain. Good with food. mcberko (18600) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 12, 2012
On tap at Upright, pours a murky, dirty brown / dark amber with a small beige head. Aroma of very slightly smoke, some woody notes and a light fruitiness. Flavour of sweet, lightly smoked malt, caramel, light wood and some fruitiness. Not much smoke to this, but a lot of sweetness. Decent stuff.
