We brewed an IPA. No really, we did. But its probably not what youre thinking. Nothing crazy, but we decided to make a traditional English-style IPA. It has half the bitterness and hop charge that some popular west coast or American IPAs have, but hey, its a start. It all sprang from a discussion regarding what yeast strain to use on our upcoming oyster stout. Last year we used a Scottish strain which certainly made for a tasty profile, but nonetheless we were interested in trying something new. Because the oyster stout is of British origin, it made sense to use a yeast along those lines. Luckily, our supplier has one that goes right by that name - "British Ale". Id used it a couple times in homebrews and enjoyed the overall character, and since we were still waiting on the extra friendly folks at Hama Hama Oyster Company to provide us with the beers highlight ingredients, we figured it would be fun to use the yeast on something else in the meantime. The Willamette hops that we got from the 2010 harvest were especially nice, and so it was an easy decision to make the English-style IPA with them as the sole flavor and aroma hop.

Cloudy orange, thin smear of foam. Smells like pine, and a little rough, if that makes any sense. Palate is smooth, though. weird. Hints of chocolate and coffee mixed with grassy hops.

On tap at the tasting room. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. A nice floral nose with some caramel and biscuit. The flavor is toast, marmalade, some medium bitterness, light caramel and pine. Pretty light and nice.

Tap at 16 Tons. Vivid golden pour with a thin, indistinct white head. Smells of yeast, pepper, earthen hops, biscuit. Taste much the same, though a little more malt forward. Very dry finish, pretty solid British styled IPA though.

Tap. Golden with a decent white head. Aroma is subdued spicey and earth hops. Flavor is decent malt with some biscuit. Not too much hop bitterness. Good balance. Obviously not a big west coast IPA, but a good British example based on my limited experience.

Golden in color, clear with a thin head. Lots of good Yeast and Hops aroma. Very hops forward and dry. The yeast gives off a earth flavors with added pepper to the flavor. This was dry finish and tasty bitter, nicely brewed IPA. This is not a tongue killer.
