COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Barleywine is only the second take here at Upright, although the first from years ago was English style while this one is American. That means higher abv and more hops. In this case, 6 different varieties were added to an overnight boil, which produced a very deep malt character from a grist of nearly 98% Thomas Fawcett halcyon pale malt. The concentrated wort was fermented with one British and one American ale yeast, then split 60% into rum/bourbon casks and 40% into stainless steel for 4 months. The resulting blend shows remarkable balance for such a potent beer, with a very ingredient driven profile that doesn’t fight with higher alcohols.
Limited to 120 hand-numbered bottles.

On tap at Alibi. Pours slightly hazy reddish amber with a white head. Aroma is sweet, fresh, citrusy, hoppy, some bourbon notes in the background. Taste is sweet, hoppy, candied fruits. Slightly woody, bourbon barrels with vanilla notes aftertaste. Very good.

Bottle 118 of 120. A big thanks to Matt for this very unique brew! Cheers my friend!

Bottle share with bytemesis group. Cloudy caramel brown. Folks are saying tea, I buy that, plus some grain and light hops. Bittersweet, dry, roasty, mineral after taste. Kind of like it, kind of don’t.

On tap at the brewery. Pours amber/brown with a cream-colored head. Aroma of caramel and toffee and some sweet malts, oak and light rum and whiskey, some light bitter hops, and some dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Smoother texture. A solid barley wine.

On tap @ the brewery, RBSG. Hazy deep auburn, diminishing beige head. Chewy barley toffee, sherry, cherries, warming finish. Rich but not hot, sweet but not cloying, moderate bitterness. Very enjoyable.

brokensail (16678) - Dublin, California, USA - JUN 23, 2015
On tap @ Upright. Hazed copper pour with a thin ring of khaki head. Lots of caramel and brown sugar. Not terribly barrel forward, but some vanilla and rum. Pretty sweet flavor. A whole lot of brown sugar and caramel. More grainy and bitter than I’d think. Some oak, charred barrel, and rum. Fair amount of candied dark fruits. Interesting beer.
