Bottle from the brewery long ago. 41 of 115.
A: Deep dark mahogany with a firm luxurious cappuccino head. Lacing.
N: Intense oak, caramel, and bourbon in the forefront. Definite char and alcohol with a mixture of baker’s chocolate and toffee. Some peppercorn and plenty of cracker. Sprinklings of peppercorn and rye.
T: Big sweetness and potent bitterness.
M: Plenty of alcohol in here. Medium-heavy body with subtle carbonation.
O: Tasty, but I definitely prefer the Eastside. Even after all these years, this one still hasn’t settled down. Might be the Bull Run whiskey and I don’t get along. Sledutah (7526) - Utah, USA - JUN 21, 2015

Enjoyed at an all barley wine tasting at Travis’s house on February 21. The pour is a nice brown color with a khaki colored head. Nice and creamy. The aroma is lots of caramel malts with a light woodiness and a strong rum sweetness. The flavor is really sweet, definitely heavily influenced by the rum. Beyond that, there is a lot of caramel and roasted malt. The dark fruits begin to come in on the end, but it’s pretty basic and plain. The mouth feel is decently thick, with a nice subtle carbonation. I’d like it to be a little thicker. The aftertaste is lingeringly sweet caramel and light booze. Pretty good, but the rum dominates so much! tectactoe (3125) - Michigan, USA - FEB 23, 2015
Bottle: 72/115. Murky, opaque brown pour. Dense mahogany hints, topped with a creamy layer of khaki colored foam. Heavy sweet caramel malt aroma with smooth underlying notes of wood, bourbon, butter toffee, & even some notes of rich, dark chocolate. Sweet flavor, almost like a rum cake. Lots of caramel, cocoa dust, whiskey, heavy vanillin, wood, toffee, & a strong dark fruitiness in the back-end; prune, fig, raisin. Pretty decadent, rich mouth feel with modest carbonation. Really nice.

thanks to Shmeal on TB for the beer
Dark mahogany brown with a light tan head that falls to a collar. Good lacing.
Nose is caramel, dark fruits, pine, booze, and subtle oak and whisky. Nice nose as the fruits stand out quite well.
Taste is mostly caramel, dark fruits and booze again. Slightly hot. Undertones of the barrel which is quite nice . Quite English in style.
A bit hot but workable. Thick and rich with low carbonation. Like how the barrel component is very subtle and the base beer stands out well. daknole (11049) - Scottsdale, Arizona, USA - MAY 1, 2014
Brown pour, tan head. Boozy, caramel, molasses, a bit harsher than the other barrel version of this beer we tried. Still quite tasty, but not as well integrated and maybe I get a hint more oxidation. Ibrew2or3 (8614) - Tempe, Arizona, USA - APR 27, 2014
750mL bottle sample courtesy of dak, thanks. It pours with a murky deep amber body that supports a tan head of foam. The aroma offers up firm spicy oak and then it heads into some smooth booze, big pine hops and slivers of sweet molasses. The taste is full on the palate with smooth sweet molasses and malts and then moving into a mix of pine hops, booze and spicy oak followed by a subtle soft sweet vanilla note. It ends a bit hot but totally in line with a barrel aged barleywine. Solid. hopscotch (11101) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - DEC 14, 2013
Bottle... This beer rocks!… Pours murky and brown with a small, creamy, off-white head. Good retention. The aroma features caramel, vanilla and bourbon. Full-bodied and lightly creamy with tingly carbonation. The flavor and finish deliver sweet caramel, vanilla and bourbon warmth. World class treatment of a damn fine beer! Bottle @ Bobby’s house, shared by GT. Mahogany pour with a small khaki head. Nose is all toffee, toasted walnuts, and chocolate. Vanilla, some caramel, whiskey, and dark fruit. Quite nice. Good sweetness to the flavor. Lots of toffee, caramel, vanilla, and walnuts. Mild booze, whiskey, caramel, oak, and chocolate.
