COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Dunkel style is what many refer to as the original beer of Munich and the surrounding countryside and villages (Dorf in German) of Bavaria. This everyday beer ranges in color from amber to dark brown, depending on the amount of Munich and roasted malts used. Ours is a deep reddish brown with a rich malty flavor. The sweetness of the malt is balanced by the use of another Bavarian friend...the Hellertau hop...in this specific case Hersbrucker grown near Wolnzach, Hallertau. OG 13.2 Plato (Willi Becher)

Bottle at home. Pours clear deep brown with a large, creamy and bubbly beige head, long retention. Aroma is rich, caramelized toast, nutty and grainy malt with rich melanoidins and soft earthy hops. Flavor is nutty, toast and caramelized malt, lightly sweet with rich melanoidins, spicy and earthy hops and light hop bitterness with a clean, lager character and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

Bottle from Tavour. Dark brown and clear with a light head. Toasty, malty, fresh, clean, rich and toasty. Moderate depth of flavor. Clean and balanced palate. Not my style but very pleasant for a dunkel. Fun and easy drinking.

Draft at the Manchester brewpub. Dark and brooding, reddish black and downright Teutonic. The choco-roasty character takes me back to the Fatherland, deeply malty, well balanced, and easy to drink. (#6603, 5/15/2017)

16.9floz bottle, no freshness date, costs about $9/4-pack or $2.50 for a single. consumption date of this review, 02.03.2017. Poured into a mug glass. Murky, reddish medium-brown in color. Malty sweet aroma, full on the palate for the alcohol content, and taste is woodsy. A good dark lager, and one of Urban Chestnut better offerings.
