Reverence Series #1: Our first beer in our Reverence series of traditional European-style beers, is a sessionable German lager known as a Zwickelbier - a very old ’classic’ with a heritage traced back to the Middle Ages. Zwickel, pronounced ‘zv-ick-el’, is unfiltered, unpasteurized and finishes as a smooth-drinking, vitamin rich (from the yeast), naturally cloudy beer. Hops: Hallertau Perle, Hallertau Mittelfrüh. Malts: Two-Row Pilsner.

FROTHINGSLOSH (8291) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 11, 2013
Sampled on draft at the House of 1000 beers this beer poured a dark golden color with a huge creamy yellow-white head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was bready with a faint citrus note. The flavor was bready and a touch nutty with hints of lemon, egg white and pepper. Medium length yeasty citrus and pepper finish. Medium body. Fairly basic.

jonas (8280) - Garching close to the monks, GERMANY - DEC 16, 2015
Bottle, Wolnzach version. Cloudy, light floaties. Slightly yeasty, grassy nose, fairly restrained. Medium light body, not chewy enough. Pretty unspektacular finish. Needs more character.

3.4
Idiosynkrasie (8214) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - MAR 3, 2015
500ml bottle. Hazy, milky golden colour with huge, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Grainy aroma with protein accentuation, yeasty and minimally doughy, thereby fresh and airy. Taste is dry, grainy, husky, protein notes, a touch of lemon. A Zwickel as it shall be, reverence evinced.

AirForceHops (8037) - Epping, New Hampshire, USA - NOV 10, 2015
Bottle from Julio’s Liquors. Consumed very chilled. Hazy golden color with standard Co2 level, spotty lace around the edges of the glass. Aroma of Noble hops, grain and skunky lager yeast.

The flavor has a solid malt base with the Noble hops, skunky yeast and grassy notes. Ends on a mild sweetness. Straw hints. This is exactly as it would taste in Germany. A perfect example of the style.

BMan1113VR (7930) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JUN 10, 2013
Bottle. Pours with a clear yellow golden hued body with a large fluffy white head. Aromas are of baked bread, toast, malt, straw. Mildly grassy with some hop aroma (noble, grassy, spicy mostly. Flavors are delicate, malty, bready, clean, hoppy, grassy. Very, very clean, light minerality. A touch of ripe apple. Very tasty. Lightly grassy, smooth malt. Medium carbonation dry mouthfeel, lower body. Good!

GenDV138 (7899) - Falls Church, Virginia, USA - JUN 24, 2014
4 oz draft pour at Urban Chestnut Midtown during RBSG 2014. Hazy golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of sweet malt, citrus, caramel. Tastes of citrus, sweet malt, dark fruit, caramel. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Malty mouthfeel.

2.3
Ernest (7890) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JAN 16, 2013
Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is hazy medium yellow, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (grain/cracker, husks), lightly hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of DMS, linoleum, and detergent. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly unclean, husky. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Seems like maybe some promise lies under the covers, but the clunky/industrial flaws are prominent and difficult to ignore (in both nose and mouth). A drain pour, but at least the brewer’s heart was in the right place.

lusikka (7833) - Tampere, FINLAND - SEP 19, 2015
500 ml bottle. Pours a yellow colour with a small foamy head. Aroma of grainy malts, grassy hops and honey-like sweetness. Flavour of crisp grassy bitterness, honey, yeastiness, herbal notes and grass. Light bodied. Bright and refreshing. A bit too sweet.

3.5
Strykzone (7806) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - JUL 30, 2011
Draft at the brewery. This is hazy and golden. A lemon grass and bready aroma. Some grain is tasted with gentle hops with light fruit and flowers. There is a hint of spice. This is subtle and tasty. I love the low ABV.
