3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at FoBAB 2013 (Chicago, IL). Pours a deep black opaque viscous pour. Dark and ominous with some loose tannish bubbly head. Faint lacing, thicker legs on the swirl. Aromas show some toasty malts, cocoa and roast. Subtle oak, mellow red wine, faint vanilla. A more mellow nose, a bit vinous as it warms. Initial is medium bodied, a bit thin with a firm tannic red barrel presence. Almost overbarreled with red wine, graphite, some earth and oak. Mellow roast, some toasty qualities and coffee. Middle is a bit of vanilla, gentle creaminess, the red wine seems dominant here, covering up some of those good base elements at this point I’d like to see. Red wine, dryness, and toast. Some carmelized elements, toasts show a bit. Mellow vanilla, cocoa. Backend is a bit more full, toasty and roast, some gentle fudge and ash. It comes together eventually but the barrel really overruns this, kinda sullies it a bit as it seems a bit overdone. Ok.
