skortila (6025) - Baarn, NETHERLANDS - MAY 18, 2003
Aroma is alcoholic, some malts, honey and spices. Cloudy, amber coloured beer, lasting head. Taste is spicy, bit malty. Citrus perhaps. Palate is bitter and a little alcoholic. Nice brew.

Label says barley wine indeed, but it also says 11,5 % ABV. The beer itself reminded me of the La Trappe Quadrupel, which i admire. Golden amber color, with a medium creamy lasting head. Aroma is spicy, amber malty, bit bubble gum. Taste of spicy amber malts, alcohol can definitely be noticed, therefore don't drink it as a starter. Palate is belly-warming. Sirupy texture, sharp carbonating.

Trappistenbier (52) - BELGIUM - MAY 8, 2003
UPDATED: AUG 20, 2003 This is absolutely the best beer of the Urthel range. One thing is remarkable and that's the overal spice taste and aroma with a hintof raisins. There's no spices in this beer according brewmaster Hildegard. Spice taste coming from hops I suppose. This beer is 11.5 % strong and you really can taste that. The combination of malts, hops and alkohol is in perfect balance. A beer which has to be tasted as carefully as can be. An absolute recommendation.

Not a barlewine by my standards. Very much a fine Belgian ale though. Very complex and compelling, but with a bit of a bite that might be expected.

Sampled draught at Akkurat, Stockholm.
Brown-amber colour. Fruity honeyaroma. Very sweet. Clean and malty with syrupy mouthfeel. Quite hoppy, with bitter finish. Does good job of hiding the 12%.

Clear amber coloured beer with a bread aroma. Very malty taste with some spices. Fairly sweet.

bierkoning (13894) - La Tropica/Doarp, NETHERLANDS - NOV 1, 2002
UPDATED: AUG 10, 2008 From Van Steenberge: Raisinny aroma with mango and pepper. Sweet, yeasty flavor with raisin and pepper. A bit too alcoholic, but enough bite to make it worthwile. 7 4 6 3 13 = 3.3 From Van Steenberge, best until 2/07, tasted in august 2008: Bottle. Orange brown color, cloudy. Butter and toffee in the aroma. Cream sherry flavor, slightly alcoholic, with butter, toffee and mango. Delicious, aging does this beer well. From Koningshoeven: Bottle. Dark amber color. Cake dough, flowers and some dried fruit in the aroma. Sweet and alcoholic flavor with dried fruit and some perfumed bitterness. Strong and powerful with a reasonable balance.
