The new masterpiece from the Val-Dieu brewery. A very complex and full-bodied beer with a long aftertaste. The brewmaster advices to cellar the beer for a year for it to unfold its full potential.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a chalice, dark brown with no head to speak of. Aroma was a big dose of dark fruit. The taste was sweet and as expected a lot of prune, raisin, fig and the like. Lightly carbonated. Very little alcohol burn. This pales in comparison to something like St. Bernadus ABT 12, but still a nice beer and an under-rated brewer.

Light malty nose. Pours very dark brown, little carbonation. Well rounded mouth but the alchool shows up soon in mouth. Some mild vanilla, tiny little cinammon, not much else...

Sweet aroma of sugar, dates, chocolate, raisin, brown/reddish with a thin white head very persistant, full body, medium carbonation, i appreciate the intense sweet notes, again dark fruits, good and pleasant warming final...in this hostile land there is a very good strong ale.

BOTTLE 33 CL. Clear dark ruby-brown, big beige head. Strong fruity and vinous aroma, just a touch of dark sugars. The taste is nice blend of dried dates, port wine, almonds and spicy warming alcohol. Full-bodied yet easy to drink. Excellent.

Sampled from the tap at Hopcat A2. Pours a deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet fruit, caramel and grains with biscuit supporting. Flavor has light fruits and biscuit with an earthy grains backing.

Blind. Ruikt weer off, zoals ik wel vaker heb. Ziet er wel aardig uit, teveel carbo. Sterk, zoet, kruidig.

Full draught at source, late Nov 2016, served too cold at La Casse-Croute to serve as dessert to my boulets liégoises. - Cinnamon and plum compote aromatics spiced with aniseed make up the surface lure of this typically smooth and straightforwardly composed Val Dieu abbey beer. The roasted malts add enough bready depth and the seasonal greetings of roasted almonds to provide the structure and some depth lacking in the the yeast profile. Some coriander broth underneath, orange bitters. Had this before on tap at Moeder Lambiek and it has to be said this remains a creamy-smooth palate pleaser thanks to/despite its obvious instant consumability. - Will revisit my 75cl bottle with some age on it.
