From the Valhalla Brewery in Unst, comes this dark, full bodied ale. Named from the title fondly given to Shetland by expatriate Shetlanders, it brings you a taste of the beautiful Shetland Isles and their clean, sparkling environment. Auld Rock was the first ale brewed by Valhalla Brewery. With an ABV of 4.5% it is full-bodied, dark ale, with a well balanced malt and hop nose, leading to a clean and smooth finish.

   AROMA 6/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 8/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 16/20

500ml bottle. Surprised by the low rating of this beer from other people. I thought this was refreshingly different. The aroma was caramel with maybe liquorice and these were noticeable in the flavour too. This was balanced well by bittering hops. Perhaps not as complex as some other dark beers, the aroma was quite faint also but where it counts (flavour) this beer was excellent.

(bottle) hazy dark ruby-brown colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of toasted malts and caramel, with some notes of dark fruit and a touch of yeast. flavour is mostly yeast and roasted malts, with lots of tobacco, some liquorice and a semi-dry roasty finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Full bodied dark ale. Large tan head that disappates. A malt ale with a hop nose. Clean & smooth finish. Pours black with brown edges like treacle. Nose plain liquorice & malty aroma. Taste is very rich and heavy but grows on you. Light & carbonated palate. Bitter aftertaste.

turbothy (1141) - Bonn, GERMANY - MAR 11, 2014
Pours almost black with small head. Malty aroma. Powerful roasted flavour from a beer with such relatively low alcohol content. Very nicely made.

allmyvinyl (11026) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - FEB 9, 2014
500ml bottle shared with jeevan. Pours clear dark brown with a thin tan head. Aromas of dried fruit, something earthy too. Taste has a toffee sweetness, then a light bitterness. Not bad.

JohnRMurdoch (5053) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - JAN 26, 2014
500ml bottle from Valhalla’s Goat. Dark chestnut brown, reasonable head. Sweet treacle grain malt aroma. Dry grassy grain malt aroma. Bitter aftertaste. Not really my sort of beer but this one is OK.

Scopey (15725) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 24, 2013
Bottle at home. It pours deep brown with a medium beige head. The nose is earth, wood, leather, berry, vinous, liquorice and cocoa. The taste is smooth, light roast, toast, coffee, bitter-sweet, berry, vinous, jammy, toasted sugar, wood and leather with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Smooth, balanced and pretty tasty. Solid.

Nilz (523) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - DEC 14, 2013
500ml bottle from Aldi, a ruddy almost-black ale with a tan head though that dissipated. Aroma burnt molasses and dark fruit, taste had a nice bitter, roast, fruit taste, a smoky hint - rather liked it.
