3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Strong roasty aroma with some raisin-like fruity notes in the fairly restrained aroma. Opaque dark brown body is topped by a generous tan coloured head that recedes to cover with some lace. Flavour is quite roasty with a surprising lack of hop character or bitterness. Tastes more like a stout than anything else. Medium-light body with moderate carbonation. Fairly drinkable if a bit unexciting. Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle purchased at Hellsgate in March 2013.
Had to check the menu again as the bartender told me it was stout. It’s halfway tween stout and CDA--not much hop presence but not the weight or mouth feel of a stout. Chocolate aroma, with a little resin & molasses. Slight fruitiness to the flavor, coffee & toffee. mcberko (18583) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 26, 2015
On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is dry, with bitter dry cocoa, roast and light piney hops. Flavour is decently balanced, with roasted malt and an earthy hoppiness. Pretty competently crafted - just nothing overly interesting. Okay, but lacking. Ferris (16296) - Burnaby, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 25, 2015
Draft - Roast and light hops. Deep maroon with a decent light brown head. Dark roast with some herbal pine hop notes. Nice. fiulijn (21022) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 20, 2015
Draught at St. Augustine’s, VancouverOakes (18543) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 7, 2015
The color is almost black. Mild aroma of roasted malts, ashes; metallic. Dry mouthfeel; it has some ashy roasted malt flavor, but it’s far from impressive, and without the required body; strong bitterness, a bit of minty hop resins, but not much hop quality.
Bottle from the government store. Dark brown. Thin head. . The aroma is mostly chocolate with some woody hops influence. A bit thin at irst, but there’s some fudgey sugars in the finish, and a woody, balancing hop bitterness as well. Good.

Bottle. black, lively carbonation, offwhite head. Roasted notes with a grassy west coast hop counterpoint. Medium light chewy body, sparkly mouthfeel. Quite pleasant and drinkable. rwgould (331) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUL 29, 2013
650ml bottle, served in a tulip. Pours an opaque black with a big but sparse beige head. Aroma: Malt, roasted walnuts, soy sauce. Slight hint of caramel and coffee. Palate: Thick bodied, oily, fizzy, astringent, harsh finish. Taste: Slightly sweet start, super burnt nutty flavour. Bleh. GuillaumeCL (344) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 23, 2013
Bottle from Brewery Creek. Pours an opaque black (true to the name) with a bunch of foamy tan head that dissipates normally. Smell is quite hoppy, pineapple, citrus, and then just a hint of roasted malt in the background. Palate is on the lighter side of medium bodied with quite active, but still soft feeling carbonation. Taste is the where this misses, there’s a bit of roasted malt flavour, mostly coffee, but there’s nothing else really, a bit of bitterness in the aftertaste that lasts quite a while. Was quite promising at first, too bad. Tmoney99 (14860) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - JUL 19, 2013
Draft. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy tan head that lasted and produced good lacing. Moderate complex toasted sweet malt & earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium toasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. This is a solid beer. Pours Very Dark Brown with beige head, light lacing. Restrained citrus and pine nose. Restrained citrus and coffee flavour. A black IPA made for people who might find the typical IPA "too strong" I guess, but they’re probably not the ones buying the bombers in the first place.
