Tap, brewery. Nice clear dark brown body with a small foamy off-white head. Great chocolate and roasted malt nose with some sweet licorice and caramel. The flavor is a bit thin and husky, but there’s some nice chocolate and light roastiness. Very clean finish with licorice and light roast coffee. Clean crisp mouthfeel, fine fizzy carbonation. Nice light hoppiness on the back end. Really nice easy drinking beer. Came across much like a Schwarzbier. beerguy101 (5360) - Newark, California, USA - OCT 8, 2002
Dark black color, medium head. Roasted malts, slightly sweet. Nicely hopped, good balance. Mouthfeel is full and round. Smooth taste. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. zeek (194) - British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 19, 2009
Color and opacity is similar to a porter, but the big carbonation bubbles betray its lager roots.
Pours a big head which disappears quickly. Nice roasted malt aroma.
Flavor is good, the roasted malt overwhelms any subtle flavors this beer may have. Finishes with almost no after taste, but leaves a slight oily like film in mouth.
Will buy again. stantheman (1079) - British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 29, 2012
Bottle at Hops in New West. Lots of good head here! Very dark in color, with a little translucency about the edges. Well malted for sure, and it’s predominately smoky in character. A good’un , yup! RD400F (226) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - APR 5, 2013

Appearance: Black with a light brown head. Transparent? It’s a mystery....
Aroma: Sweet licorice, fruitcake, dark fruits, raisins...but it’s quite faint. Mostly dark malts but if you sniff, well, it’s there. That being said there’s loads of chocolate. Pretty complex.
Taste: Bittersweet, chocolate flavors galore, some raisin/dark fruits as well as licorice flavors. Pretty much mirrors the aroma.
Palate: Kinda thin considering all the flavours which is kind of a letdown. On the plus side there’s nothing I can find that’s particularly bad aside from that.
Overall: Pretty good for what it is. Got this in a taster pack and I’m seriously starting to doubt that anything else in it will be even slightly close to as good. I’ll see I guess!
341 ml bottle. Clear deep dark copper, lasting small foamy tan head. Aroma of darker roasted lager malt, chocolate and nuts. Taste is darker toasty lager malt, milk chocolate, a bit nutty with a hint of coffee, faint earthy herbal hop. Average carbonation, light bodied, lightly hopped. Surprisingly nice milder robust flavor with a light clean lager finish makes it: MLF (More Lagerboy Friendly) mgermani (1002) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 28, 2007
Pours a deep black-amber with an off-white head and some lace. Slight molasses aroma, slightly sweet and a bit stale. A very present port-like taste with light roasted and dark crystal malt, slight hop presence, slightly stale with a warming finish. Carbonation reminiscent of soda-pop, decently creamy but thin, with a dry finish. Not a bad beer, some complexity to it, but too light in body, despite the pleasant finish. bulldogops (2702) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - AUG 11, 2009
On tap at Howard Johnson (by the Commonwealth pool). Very dark pour with a weak tan head that is frothy, but fades quickly. Aroma is roasted malts, molasses. Taste is mild cofeee, chocolate, and molasses. Finish is quite smooth, this beer is quite enjoyable. houblonchien (89) - CANADA - APR 11, 2014

Pours dark brown black, good head. Aroma of roasted malts, floral. Taste is roasted malty lager with loads of carbonation. I enjoyed.
