UPDATED: JUL 16, 2003 Initial rating 9/02: Damn - I thought I'd tried and experienced most every flavor and aroma, but this is the first time I've ever had a Balsamic Beer! The aroma and even taste of balsamic vinegar is so noticeable, even a child couldn't miss it. Although I'm not the only one to taste vinegar (Bov, Omhper, Ecrvich did too), some others didn't mention it, leaving me to wonder about quality control and whether my bottle underwent some spoilage on the way from the Old Country. The beer itself is much, much sweeter than Rodenbach or the Liefmans Goudenband, and would be a great session Flanders Ale, but for the vinegar.
Rerate 5/03: MUCH better! Very little balsamic vinegar flavor (though it's still there slightly!). A very sweet ale with lots and lots of tartness combined for tons of complexity. Excellent and just plain delicious! Note: This beer is prone to spoilage, so you MUST ensure you're buying a fresh bottle or else you'll not taste the sweetness. This was a incredibly good beer. Nose is like fruity wine. Dark amber brown color. Very smooth and fruity taste, especially cherries. The underlying ale taste mixes well with the fruit for a very well balanced and delicious brew. I’m glad I got the 750 ml one, just 12 oz of this wouldnt have been enough. I love this style of beer! Sour cherries everywhere. It pours a very dark red/brown. Smells very acidic. A large white head foams leaving a small rim for the remander of the glass. Duchesse de Bourgogne is a red ale in the style of Rodenbach. This 6.2% abv beer comes from the Brouwerij Verhaeghe of Vichte, Belgium. This beer, like Rodenbach, is actually a blend of two different beers. One of the beers is aged for 18 months in oak casks, the other aged in oak for an 8 month period. These two beers are then blended and bottled. This beer is very complex and delicious, gaining its complexity from the blending, and the aging in oak. This gives the beer a very vinous quality, and these red ales have often been called "The Burgundies of Belgium.".
Duchesse de Bourgogne pours to a deep red/brown color with a rocky white head, and a vibrant carbonation. The nose is wonderful, aromas of sweet malt marry with notes of oak and yeastiness. The palate is firm with flavors of malt, oak, hints of ripe fruit, and flavors of yeast. This beer finishes with a wonderful oaky, sweet and sour edge that lingers on the tongue.
This is a wonderful beer, and a great showcase of the blending of two different beers. The 18 month old red ale has strong, sharp, sour notes that marry with the sweet malty and yeasty notes of the 8 month old red ale. This makes for a very complex beer with vinous qualities. This beer would make a perfect aperitif, a beer to have with a meal, and a beer to use as an ingredient in many dishes. I would match this beer with a cheese course, steamed mussels, grilled steaks, beef stews, or pork dishes. This beer would also make the perfect match with roasted turkey. It has been a tradition of mine for the last few years to drink Grand Cru or a Belgian Red with Thanksgiving dinner. The sweet and sour tart flavors really cuts through the richness of the turkey meat and stuffing.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2008 Corked bottle. Pours with a moderate lacy white head. Perfect mahogany with ruby hue. Smell is very complex. Belgium malt, cherry, plum, and raspberry vinegarette. The taste is deliciously complex, with a bracing sourness thats followed by lots of fruity and spicy sweetness. Beautiful dark brown with a darker, off white head. Poured from small bottle to a goblet. Explosive vegetal, herbal nose. Deep, cascading flavors which defy logic. Amazing length. I could drink this every day.
