"Echt Kriekenbier (real cherry beer)" is, as the name suggests, a cherry beer that is manufactured with only the real fruit of cherries instead of with flavor enhancers or extracts of cherries. The fruit is sourced from the region around Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium). Unlike the most famous fruit beers is the basic beer of the "real cherry beer" not a Lambic but a West-Flemish red-brown ale aged in oak wood. About mid-July at the picking, the Northern cherries are brought in at the brewery and laid in on the base beer. Because the taste of the cherry fruit varies from year to year and this according to the number of hours of sunshine or rain, the kriekenbier at its final composition is blended with cherry beer from the year before and two-year old cherry beer. This is intented to have a a more constant taste of the "real cherry beer" over the years.

Bottle. Balsamic, cherry oak. Taste is vanilla, marzipan, cherry, balsamic, apple, cherry, oak, sweet and sour. Very amenable

Bottle at The Bottle Lab, Leek. Pours a clear red colour with a frothy pale pink head. Aroma of cherry, oak, wood, a hint of funk and subtle marzipan. Taste of sour cherry, oak, some funk, slight marzipan and subtle spice. Medium bodied, soft carbonation and a slick texture. A sour cherry finish with a little oaky bitterness in the aftertaste. A delicious kriek, sour cherry and the oaky bitterness work wonderfully. Not too sweet and not too tart, well worked.

Excellent balance between the base beer and fruit. Nice oak character, good acidity, not too dry or tannic.

Precisely what it should be. Tart, but not overly sour. A bit of sugar considering the style, which fits with the cherries.Aroma is sour and a bite of vinegar on the nose. Color is a nice brown red. Mouth, tasty tart and sour with some light sugars. Tap

Seems bit one dimensional cherry. Thou that cherry impact is quite lovely, I would like more depth to it. Some wood dry impact in background. Moderate tartness with light sweetness Decent, but bit boring

Pours a clear cranberry color with a thin pinkish ring. Sour, tart fruity aroma. Fairly thin texture and light body. Crisp tart cherry flavor with a lightly dry finish. Not as good as the other Verhaeghe cherry flavored ales but still tasty and pretty enjoyable.

borre_m (1733) - NORWAY - NOV 25, 2016

25 cl bottle. Slightly hazy red-amber colour with a thin, off-white head. Fruity aroma with cherries, caramel malts, oak and wheat malts. Taste is lightly sweet. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes slightly tart with cherries. Lovely Oud Bruin.

skmikeg (1826) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 6, 2016
Pours reddish dark brown with a one finger off white head with good lacing. Aroma is of sour cherries, oak, vinager, funk, wet hay, over ripe sour fruits, sweet malts, and some citrus. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a slightly creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, semi sour, long, lingering finish. Overall, a pretty tasty kreik.
