"Echt Kriekenbier (real cherry beer)" is, as the name suggests, a cherry beer that is manufactured with only the real fruit of cherries instead of with flavor enhancers or extracts of cherries. The fruit is sourced from the region around Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium). Unlike the most famous fruit beers is the basic beer of the "real cherry beer" not a Lambic but a West-Flemish red-brown ale aged in oak wood. About mid-July at the picking, the Northern cherries are brought in at the brewery and laid in on the base beer. Because the taste of the cherry fruit varies from year to year and this according to the number of hours of sunshine or rain, the kriekenbier at its final composition is blended with cherry beer from the year before and two-year old cherry beer. This is intented to have a a more constant taste of the "real cherry beer" over the years.

Pours reddish dark brown with a one finger off white head with good lacing. Aroma is of sour cherries, oak, vinager, funk, wet hay, over ripe sour fruits, sweet malts, and some citrus. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a slightly creamy mouthfeel and a semi dry, semi sour, long, lingering finish. Overall, a pretty tasty kreik.

Bottle from saveure. Poors clear red with no head. Nose is oak, cherries. Heavy carbonation with cuts into the taste a little bit. Palate is cherries, but overshadowed by woody, oaky notes. Finish is short and woody. This is pretty good, but the carbonation is too heavy and overpowering for my taste.

250ml bottle from Liquor Mountain. Pours a deep clear red, nice white lacing. Big sour cherry aroma, vinegary notes with wood. Lovely approachable sour cherry flavour, with a second half that bends into a more malt and oak showing, albeit subtle. Lovely fizz and good restrained sourness. Surprised this is 7%, much more easy to down in large amounts than say, Duchesse.

I liked this one although it is not a lambic kriek. It would benefit from a bit more tartness,

Bottle. Clear, deep red, but with no head. Lovely cherry aroma. Sour, but well balanced with the fruit. Satisfying but not hugely complex, but still several layers to it.

DAA; Bottle 11,2 FL. OZ., from Vinmonopolet. Pours large clear red with a frothy creamy, lasting and lacing, reddish head. Nose is moderate to heavy, cherries, moderate sour, light almonds, yeast and spice. Taste is medium sweet and bitter sour with a lasting, sweet and sour cherries finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is average. Very refreshing.

330 ml bottle picked up locally consumed at home. Pours a clear reddish auburn color with a small pinkish head. The aroma and flavor have tart cherries, oak, caramel, hints of chocolate, acidic, mild funk, some sweetness from the cherries, ok.

Cokemonkey11 (891) - - MAY 19, 2016
1/3 liter, brown bottle. Unpoured. Scent is sort of smoky and herbal. But clear cherry. Taste is a nice medium sour body with some dryness. Taste s weird after toothpaste! Surprise!!!😂finish is clean and dry. Great.
