COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
"Echt Kriekenbier (real cherry beer)" is, as the name suggests, a cherry beer that is manufactured with only the real fruit of cherries instead of with flavor enhancers or extracts of cherries. The fruit is sourced from the region around Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium). Unlike the most famous fruit beers is the basic beer of the "real cherry beer" not a Lambic but a West-Flemish red-brown ale aged in oak wood. About mid-July at the picking, the Northern cherries are brought in at the brewery and laid in on the base beer. Because the taste of the cherry fruit varies from year to year and this according to the number of hours of sunshine or rain, the kriekenbier at its final composition is blended with cherry beer from the year before and two-year old cherry beer. This is intented to have a a more constant taste of the "real cherry beer" over the years.

On draft at HopCat in Ann Arbor. In prep for Rare Day tomorrow. The pour is a dark, dark ruby color with a light pink colored ring of head and a couple spots of lace. The aroma is very sweet. There is cherry present, but it's syrupy and sweet. Candied cherries almost. Light aromas. Heavy syrupy cherry. The flavor is syrupy and sweet. Bleh. There is a nice light tartness on the back end but it's so sweet. It's not right. The mouth feel is thick and syrupy with a light carbonation and a heavy medicinal cherry. The finish is a little dry and lightly tart, but quickly fading. Meh ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2015 0.25 l bottle from De Bierkoning, best before 23/12/2018. Clear, deep red with a medium large, fluffy, slowly diminishing, pinkish white head. Sweetish-sourish, fruity and minimally funky aroma of sour cherries, bitter almond, raspberries, red wine and oak. Sweetish-sourish, fruity and minimally funky taste of cherries, red wine, oak and hints of sherbet powder, followed by a medium long, slightly vinous, oaky and tart finish. Thin to medium body, astringent and effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Maybe a tad too sweet to convince completely, but this is very delicious. I still would have liked the fruitiness to be more subtle in favour of the base beer’s characteristics. Nevertheless good.

Une bière agréable, fraîche et fruitée, idéale pour se désaltérer avec un beau fruit et la tension d’une sour ale.

Bottle. Reddish amber pour, pink tinted frothy head. Nose is cherries, fruity funk, minerals, cider, some diacetyl notes. Mouth is medium bodied, tart up front, fruit forward, then sweetens up mid-range. Balsamic, woody, cherries, mildly medicinal, band aids. Finished a little too sweet for my taste.
