COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Vichtenaar is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, Vichtenaar gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. Vichtenaar is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. Vichtenaar is one of the last Flemish Oud bruins that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 Vichtenaar was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

An excellent sour. Aroma is hints at the tartness. Smells of cherries and oak. Taste is sweet fruit initially and then the acetic tartness moves in. Highly carbonated and light bodied this is a very good sour beer. I dont get as much oak in the taste as other reviewers though.

Piwo metne w kolorze brunatnym nalewa sie z piana ktora znika bez sladu w ciagu kilku sekund. W aromacie nuty kwasowe, ocet winny i wisnie. W smaku czuc beczke i lekko dzikosc, sa kwasne owoce i lekko slodki posmak na finiszu. Praktycznie brak goryczki i wysycenie na srednim poziomie. Bardzo lubie kwasne piwka wiec to napewno chetnie powtorze.

Very dark almost black, tinge of red/brown in the light. Tart aroma, acidic sour vinegar. Big sour taste too, but quite a lot of smooth Belgian-y taste too. Fruity and a but oaky too. Relatively sweet. Lingering acidity is refreshing. Sticks to the mouth long after a sip.

330ml bottle BB 12 Feb 18. Deep hazy red with small fizzy head that recedes to a soapy film. Nice big cherry and some tart vinegar notes in the aroma, along with some sweet caramel. The taste has loads of cherry character, some apple cider vinegar, caramel sweetness, some cola, a lot of barrel aged character. Bright acidic mouthfeel, good carbonation but just a little coarse. Really quite good.

Bottle, 330ml. Pours clear deep red with initially a finger or so of soapy off-white head, which doesnt stick around long. Thin ring of lacing, no visible carb. Nose is very tart and fruity with sour cherry, blackcurrent and raspberry coming through strong and sharp. Some more fruit confectionery underneath that along with christmas-y spices; clove and cinnamon etc, some pine and some woody hints in general, and spicy, musty Belgian yeast. Small note of balsamic vinegar and less vinous in general than Duchesse. Taste is crispy, moderately sour and very fruity; assorted berries through at the front, then cherry, a hint of balsamic vinegar and into a bone dry, sour, slightly spicy finish with lingering light cereal. Body is light-medium, texture is smooth and carbonation is quite sharp, fitting the sour well; very refreshing. Very good balance of sweet and sour flavours; avoids becoming overly syrupy or dominated by vinegar or lactic sour. Better than Duchesse in my opinion.

Bottle. Deep red with a beige had thats soon a coat. Bright, almost sharp aroma of cherries, red wine vinegar, wood. Fairly light bodied, medium carbonation. 4+ Both lively and brooding flavours. Quite acidic but not sharp, with a nice balance of gentle toffee, cherries and oak. 7+ Long finish. Very nice.

The_Osprey (7811) - Richmond, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 21, 2017
January 2017 - 25cl bottle at home in Richmond as Vichtenaar, 5.1%, brewed by Br. Verhaeghe Vichte, BB June 2018. Brewed with well water and lagered in oak. Pours a very dark opaque ruby with a small foamy tan head. Aroma is intensely fruity, cherry in particular, slight balsamic edge, cabernet sauvignon wine. Pretty sniffable. Body is a touch frothy with tingly carbonation. Taste is tart, restrained dark cherry, light oak and raspberry pie, some building varnish harshness. Better than expected given that this was quite cheap. Good value.
