“Vichtenaar” is a beer, brewed with roasted malts, spicey hops, fruity yeast and soft water, pumped up from a 172 m deep well, guaranteeing constant quality and pureness of the liquor. After primary and secondary lagering, “Vichtenaar” gets a ternary fermentation in oak vessels during 8 months. These oak pipes are big tuns with a capacity varying between 500 and 2500 hectolitres. “Vichtenaar” is a traditional and specific Western Flemish beer, from the northwest of Belgium. Its taste can be described as mild-sourish and suitably complex, thanks to the long lagering on oak. This tart flavour makes it eminently suitable for the hot summer months. “Vichtenaar” is one of the last Flemish “Oud bruins” that are really lagered in the oak tuns, and are as such appreciated by the connoisseur, looking for authenticity. As early as 1958 “Vichtenaar” was crowned as the top in an international concours in Gent.

Small bottle from Liberty on The Drive in Vancouver. Dark reddish brown with generous tan head and a sour fruity nose. Very tart, moderately sweet, and very fruity. I’d hazard it compares favorably with Duchesse de Bourgogne, but I’d really have to try them side by each, which I plan to do very soon. 4

250 ml bottle bought at IC Beer in Kwun Tong.

Looks: Clear, light Cola redish brownLess than one-quarter finger head with residual soapy light beige foam which fades in 5 seconds; Fair sticky lacing with near zero carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant malt, with very strong red wine, Port wine, balsamic vinegar, strong yoghurt, red grape skin, light cherries, funk, wheat, alcohol, wood barrel and strong tannin. Nice!

Taste: Strong sour malt, with light cherries, red wine, strong yoghurt, alcohol, wood barrel, light tannic and strong lemon.

Body: Close to light; Thin but quite slick palate.

Mouth Feel: Fairly good maltyness in a wheat-thinned background. Good winey backbone with strong tartness but not much vinegar, light cherry fruity with notable barrel. No sweetness nor tannic but with strong lemon to round. Pretty good!

Hoppiness: Not nose, just lemony taste. No tannin nor bitterness, simply strong tart finish.

After Taste: Slighty dry; Yoghurty, light winey and fairly easy to mouth.

Comments: Like the Duchesse De Bourgogne, this one aroma is a bliss of nice wine, fruity sourness and barrels. Taste wise it’s a lot more simpler and lacks the complexity of the former, but at 5.1% abv, it hold its own fort pretty well and definitely more enjoyable than most watery Sour Red/ Browns. Worth my money!

Uzupełnienie oceny, pite kilka lat temu. Zapamiętane jako dosyć słodkie i lekko octowe. Trochę palone, delikatnie owocowe.

Dark brown with ruby hints. Average and quite dense white head. Ok retention and lacing. Aroma of vinegar, caramel, sugar and light cherry fruitiness. Taste follows the aroma, with a sweet caramel and sugary base, light fruity notes (cherry), vinegar and maybe a woody hint. Overall half sweet and half sour with no bitterness. Light bodied and lightly carbonated with a very nice silky, easy mouthfeel. Perhaps not impressive, but definitely highly drinkable and well made.

Amber kleurig bier met een mooie witte schuimkraag. Aroma: balsamico, kersen, klein beetje eik. Smaak: balsamico, zuur, eiken, wat vanille en wat gist. Heerlijk

Piwo metne w kolorze brunatnym nalewa sie z piana ktora znika bez sladu w ciagu kilku sekund. W aromacie nuty kwasowe, ocet winny i wisnie. W smaku czuc beczke i lekko dzikosc, sa kwasne owoce i lekko slodki posmak na finiszu. Praktycznie brak goryczki i wysycenie na srednim poziomie. Bardzo lubie kwasne piwka wiec to napewno chetnie powtorze.

Very dark almost black, tinge of red/brown in the light. Tart aroma, acidic sour vinegar. Big sour taste too, but quite a lot of smooth Belgian-y taste too. Fruity and a but oaky too. Relatively sweet. Lingering acidity is refreshing. Sticks to the mouth long after a sip.
