Ivan - unusual beer brewed in a "Russian Imperial Stout" style. This is a very strong, heavy and dark top fermented beer which once was very popular in Russia. It was brewed by English brewers specifically for Tsar’s court during Ekaterina The Great reign. Hence the ’russian’ and ’imperial’ in the name of the style. This beer has a very high original gravity and very strong in alcohol. It is also hopped with a significant amount of hops and contains a decent amount of dark and special malts. Imperial stouts almost dissipated some time ago but during last few decades we see that it becomes more and more popular. Our version of imperial stout also contains a huge amount of dark and roasted malts plus we added a whisky malt (pitted malt from 6-row barley), pitted beer malt and special Belgian brown malt. It adds to the viscous thick taste and coffee aroma the flavours of boiler oil and creosote. Named after the greatest Russian ace of WWII. High alcohol content is masked by a complex aroma, but you should better be careful! This beer is perfectly suitable for long winter nights. It matches to chocolate desserts and BBQ meals.

Thank you tderoeck! Sampled draft @ VCBF 2017. Black, little tanned head. Nose is heavy umami, lots of soy suca, herbal, roast. Taste is thick soy sauce gravy, umami, roast, overly boozy, bitter herbal. Alcoholic low soy sauce umami syrup body. Too boozy & too soy sauce for my personal taste.

Van ’t vat. Zwart bier zonder schuimkraag. Geur: niet uitgesproken, wel wat melasse en wat cacao (iets te koud?). Smaak: alcoholisch, koffie, geroosterde mout, licht zoet. Matige koolzuurprikkel. Afdronk: droog licht bitter en alcoholisch.

@VCBF2017. Sweet, spicy, cookies? complex aroma. Very smooth and creamy mouthfeel, malts, roast and a dry finish. Great stout!

Bottled 330ml (Uba ja Humal)
Opaque black color, medium-sized brownish head. Aroma has roasted malts, tobacco and booze. Full-bodied. Roasted flavor with tobacco and licorice. Alcohol is there but it is a bit sweet and doesn’t feel quite boozy. Hoppy finish. Ok although a bit too much tobacco for my liking.

Nose: Coffee, alcohol, cacao / dark chocolate. Taste: sweet, soy, then alcohol followed by roasty bitter. Appearance: black with thin quickly dissipating head.

Bottle. Black oily pour. Aroma of creamy roasted malt, licorice, booze, mocha coffee and red fruit. Taste of bitter chocolate, licorice, heavy bitter roasted malt, booze, tarr, some red fruit and a boozy finish. Heavy and boozy, the russian way.

330ml bottle at Koht. Pours almost black colour, beige-brown small head stays. Aroma is chocolatey, smoky, roasty, malty. Taste is chocolatey, smoky, bitter-sweet, malty. Almost full bodied, average carbo, oily texture. Good one, everything you look from "not that expensive" smoky stout.
