Bottle. Dark amber. Rich caramel, bourbon vanilla, and oak. Very tasty and aged well. Smooth and sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Victory does it again with this true winter treat. It’s the zenith of a boilermaker, so if you have a taste for whiskey, by all means, give it a try out of the .750 ml bottle. Cheers!

2-year-old bottle. Pours a slightly murky, barely-red brown; not-much-of-a-head turns to nothing; no lacing. Giant aroma, tons of oak, vanilla, caramel; so sweet it’s a little muddled. Flavor wood, oak, vanilla, sugar, others-say-cherry-but-I-don’t-really-sense-it. Big, sticky mouthfeel, little carbonation. Booze. 10 oz in and I know it.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with dark copper edges and a half finger beige head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spotty lacingleft behind. The aroma of this beer is similar to the base beer with a subtle bourbon barrel presence integrated into the characteristics of an American barleywine. Some toasted oak, vanilla and spicy bourbon followed by sweet and leathery malts, dark fruit and spicy, earthy hops. It only spent three months in the barrel so the bourbon doesn’t completely overpower the other notes which is a nice change in pace from most BA beers I’ve tried recently. The oak and vanilla notes stand out more than the bourbon and it still smells like the base beer. Some sweet booze, caramel, spicy rye, toffee and dark fruit notes followed by grassy, piney hops. Medium bodied with surprising amount of carbonation for the style. Decent bourbon barrel presence that’s nicely integrated into the flavors of regular Old Horizontal. Strong dry oak flavor along with some toasted coconut and vanilla bean before the spicy bourbon presence comes in. Nice bourbon flavor but it doesn’t knock you over the head and obliterate the other notes. Underneath the barrel notes, there is a nice balance of sweet and leathery malts, vinous dark fruit and dry, earthy hops. Slightly boozy but the ABV is excellently masked with only subtle heat in the finish. Hints of caramel, toffee, raisin, fig and plum countered by resinous pine and earthy hop bitterness. Complex, flavorful and while its definitely a sipper, this beer is deceptively drinkable.

From NOTES. A; Vanilla, brown sugar and alcohol. A: Pours a bronze-brown color with a nice khaki head. T: Follows the nose, very bourbon/oak forward, sweet toffee and sticky malts that ends on the bitter side. P: Thick and creamy.... perhaps too thick for a barleywine, but nothing egregious. O: Awesome barleywine. A bourbon-forward example with a nice base beer.

On tap at Bangers & Lace. Incredibly complex flavor. Starts a bit like a bit of a hoppy plain ale, but the taste transforms into brown sugar and smoky bourbon flavors, but not overpowering, with a fairly clean, slightly boozy finish. Very interesting brew.

A gift and shared from a neighbor, this beer is a powerhouse. Appearance is deep amber, mahogony, burnt red and no head. Aroma is sweet bourbon notes with tasty fruits. Taste is similar but with maple and booze. Palate is sticky but slick. Overall a very satisfying beer.

C&C bottle. Thanks to budznsudz I think. Aroma is super oaky, lots of woody aroma. Not much booze character. Light vanilla. Taste is much the same, mostly dominated by a tannin like wood without much booze/spirit. Medium, slightly chewy mouthfeel. No significant alcohol. Light carbonation doesn’t help this beer much. Light alcohol warming in the ears after a few sips. Just ok.

Sampled while visiting IL in June, 2014. 750mL bottle brought by me, I believe. Amber pour with a small khaki head, mild lacing. Disappointing aroma, not much barrel, just a wisp of vanilla and oak, otherwise lots of sweetness, caramel, fruity. Sweet flavor, too much again, not enough barrel, dark fruits, brown sugar, syrupy. Disappointed.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2015 Pours a deep red brown with a wispy white head. Big Woody, vanilla aroma. Taste has woody, cherry, general whisky and vanilla notes. Mouthfeel is pretty sticky. Finish is sweet and boozy. Excellent.
