4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: OCT 12, 2013 Finally got a few bottles of this from a local case store. Pours a hazy very reddish brown - almost pink when you hold it up to the light. The thin head is gone quickly and no lacing left behind. There is a thin but constant stream of slowly rising bubbles. Aroma is rich caramel with some floral hints of hops and something that I can’t put my finger on. Taste matches the aroma with rich caramel and a good dose of bourbon. The barrel aging is really working well here. It doesn’t quite hide the bite of Old Horizontal. Maybe a little age will smooth it out more. Finishing up the first glass - this one leaves a nice bitter on the back of the tongue that lingers long after.
Overall, this is a good one. Particularly if you are partial to Old Horizontal to begin with. I’ll have to set at least one bottle aside for while. I expect this to age nicely.
Update 12-Oct-2013: pulled another bottle of this after 9-1/2 months and it is aging well. The sharp hops have calmed down a little and the caramel is coming to the forefront. The booziness is still a little too present but it is aging nicely.
Poured from 750ml bottle after cellaring for 2 years.
Hazy, rusty amber-brown with a very thin an off-white head but good lacing.
Aroma of raisins, plums, caramel, toffee, dates, oak, vanilla and and whiskey.
Taste of plums, dates, caramel, raisins, vanilla, leather, toffee, wood and mild bourbon. You don't taste the alcohol so much as feel it.
Full body and medium/low carbonation.
Many barleywines improve with aging. This is certainly one.

Sampled from bottle at Borresteijn’s place. Clear, deep red with a tan head. Sweetish-malty aroma of caramel, vanilla, a bit of wild honey and raisins. Sweet, malty taste of molasses, raisins, vanilla and some wild honey, followed by a long, slightly bitter, warming-alcoholic finish. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Quite good! Clear copper colour. Aroma is bourbon, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Taste is a lot more bourbon with a maple tinge. Hysterically boozy. Art (3219) - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA - APR 2, 2016
Clearish copper pour. White head. Aromas of caramel, candied orange peel, vanilla. Taste is fairly sweet nice barleywine but the hops still seem to be there. dagimp (1008) - Philly, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 29, 2016
Bottle is a good 2+ years old. From a corked n caged 750 into a snifter. Pours a moderate brown with no head or lacing. Sweeeeeet aroma with booze. Mouthfeel is sweet and sticky. Very low carbonation. Taste is some bourbon with oak, mild booze, brown sugar, cinnamon, etc. Pretty good. Probaby should have drank last year. Solid but slightly oxidized by now. If Victory makes another batch, which I’m guessing they will, I’l pick up another bottle.
