In 1987, when we arrived in Bamberg, Germany for the first time, St. Otto was not there to greet two thirsty travelers in a rented Fiat. Hed been dead for 848 years but we were alive, and our recent visit to the Belgian brewery of Orval only fanned the flames of our desire for fermented pleasures. the smoked malt(rauch)beers of this lovely town where St. Otto was once bishop were our siren song, luring us into deep, exotic flavors that we never before imagined in beer. Three decades later we wondered what smoked malt might add to a Belgian-style dubbel ale. Here it is, an Otto revival of sorts. We hope it helps rejuvenate some of our brain cells that were martyred in Bamberg so long ago.

The large corked bottled looked very appealing, but I should admit I do not like many smoke beers, especially those with a strong smokiness that overpowers the other aromas and flavors. Unfortunately, this is striking example of an overly smokey brew. There is so much smoke flavor and aroma in this that the experience was somewhat more like eating a heavily smoked meat than drinking a beer, and an aftertaste that made me feel like I had tried a cigar while drinking. Of course, the texture was entirely different: In fact, the mouthfeel was exceptional. Otto Ale is smooth, with excellent carbonation and a medium-full body. O: Drink again? ... no thanks. But Id be happy to use this for cooking meats and sauces. {From notes}

Bottle from Aaron. Pours Amber with minimal head. Aromas of rotten meat and next morning smoldering coals. Taste is sweet and lightly salty. Flavors of fucked bacon. This is a total drainpour.

the smoke is done well. up front, but not overbearing in the aroma or flavor. but it seems the dubbel that is the foundation of this beer is a bot lacking and thin for the abv. really like the smoke aspect, but the base beer just ok."

A murky golden brown pour with a light head that fades quickly to lacing. Lightly sweet malts and a solid smokiness to a soft easy finish. Enjoyable, Bottle from 09/27/2011

Heres a nice old bottle (bottled on SEPT 27 2011), so lets consider this a review for historical purposes. Corked and caged. Nose is fruity with light meaty smoke, but thats clearly tailed off by half; still has a nice barleywine air about it, and the smoke is still present. Dark ruby pour is much darker without holding it up to the light, head is rich and creamy tan. Taste semi-sweet, smooth, thin malt with medium smoke and light-medium fruit, stronger caramel. Smoke is probably best rendered in the finish and aftertaste. Low bitterness, not at all tangy or infected, soft medium-full body still has plenty of carbonation otherwise and hides its alcohol really well (Id have guessed this was a normal 5.0-5.5%abv Rauchbier). Some lovely prune elements on the very bottom, and nice Dubbelish swirl with a hint of brown sugar and yeast. Still not sure a Dubbel works with smoked malt, or at least not like this.

750ml bomber from Picadilly. Pours a murky brown color with a large sudsy beige head that has good retention. The Aroma is soft with smoked malts and some misplaced fruits. The taste features that classic Bamberg smoked malt flavor intermixed with pears, apricots and bitter nuts. The palate is full and smooth with soft carbonation. Finishes long and dry. Overall: Decent smoked beer.

[5226-20130412] 750mL bottle. Plastic and smoky old permanent markers aroma. Hazy, dark amber orange body with a quick foamy white head. More permanent marker and smoky sweet vegetal base flavour. Full body. Really interesting, super smoky and has that unique permanent marker throwback to my childhood. (6/3/7/3/14) 3.3

Reddish brown pour with a cream-colored head. Aroma of smoke, dark fruit, and caramel. Mostly sweet malt flavor with dark fruit and caramel, some bread and hint of smoke flavor. Gets sweeter as beer warms. Nice beer.
