750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Pours a thick, well retained, light beige head, with layered lacing, over a clear brown (SRM 25) body.......nose is heavy roasted malts, with cocoa, chocolate, slight banana, mild licorice, slight hop spice, blance to the malts.....taste is rye, oats, chocolate, cocoa, from the various roasted malts, light banana, hints of dark fruits, dry throughout, finishing with slight hop bitterness and hints of sourness, balance to the malts......mouth feel, medium sticky body, mild alcohol warmth, moderate carbonation. This is a relatively unusual Saison with the roasted malts of the multiple grains dominating the yeasts contributions in both aroma and flavor. It is almost into the realm of a slightly spiced Porter rather than the spicy, floral tones in the more typical paler examples of Saison. BJCP 6/3/10/4/6

Sample from a shared bottle at Titans 1st Anniversary, September 9th, 2017. Pours dark brown, some beige foam. Aroma has some hints of sour, tart, berries. Tastes refreshing, barnyard funk is strong, still balanced. Really digging this.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Dark mahogany brown color. Huge rocky tan head. Earthy, yeasty fruity malt nose. Flavor upfront is toasted malt with notes of cocoa, banana and barnyard funk. Middle brings spicy malt and yeastiness. Finish is dry and spicy with more funk.

I was hoping for a regular traditional saison when I opened this so I admit a bit of disappointment when I saw the dark color. That’s where the disappointment ended. Aroma was nice and enticing. Sour smelling with a spiciness and vinegar. Pour was stunning. A beautiful hazy deep dark amber/brown with nice red hues around the edges. Taste was delicious and incredibly complex. Strong vinegar, malt and rye spiciness. As it warmed, the malt thinned out a little bit and some banana with yeast took its place. Strong biting carbonation at first l, but once it warmed up the carbonation left quickly. Very solid beer

C&C 750 mL bottle from Beer Run. Dark chestnut brown, large frothy tan head, good retention. Aroma of chocolate, cherries, funk, caramel, nuts. The taste is chocolate, plum, cherry, roasted malts. Mild funk. Medium bodied, high carbonation. Quite nice.

Pour is a dark brown almost black with a large tan head. Aroma is like chocolate covered bananas. There is also a pepper in there that for the style seems right but it does not go with the other aromas. Flavor is a bit of roast, some vinegar and a little leather. The finish does not leave much after the swallow. This was decent. I don’t know what type of yeast was used but it did not offer much. The aroma might have been the best thing about this beer.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/30/2016. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, brown sugar, chocolate, cocoa, spicy rye, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, nuttiness, coffee, leathery/musty funk, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy/funky yeast, roast/bready/rye malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, brown sugar, chocolate, cocoa, spicy rye, and toasted dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, nuttiness, coffee, leathery/musty funk, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate yeast spiciness and light-moderate herbal hop/roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of raisin, plum, fig, pear, apple, red grape, peppercorn, clove, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, brown sugar, chocolate, cocoa, spicy rye, toasted dark bread, light nuttiness/coffee, funk, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy/funky yeast, roast/bready/rye malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and no astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from carbonation and bitter/spiciness, increasing through the glass. High carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.5%. Overall this is an awesome black saison! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy/funky yeast, roast/bready/rye malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink; even with the high carbonation. Not overly foamy/prickly feeling, but getting close. Great well rounded Brett and saison yeast complexity after 9 months of age; with great malt balance. Not super funky, but has a nice amount right now. A really delicious offering.
