It’s a lively jazz rhythm, a vigorous sway, a change of view or even a roll in the proverbial hay. Now it also means the welcome jolt of joy you’ll experience upon your first sip of this session saison. Bracing, but benign, this Belgian style ale enlivens any experience with a spicy, aromatic start, citrus snap and fresh finish. Swing into spring with taste!

Bottle from Total Wine Sterling. Pours golden with an inch of white foam that leaves lacing. Nice peppery notes on the nose. Nice, clean on the tongue with some solid hop bite on the finish. Solid for style.

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, Minnesota. Pours a clear golden straw colored brew with an average sized but fast dissipating off-white head. Aroma of saison wheat, coriander, some clove, golden grain malt and a touch of Ivory soap. Taste is light to medium bodied, average carbonation with flavors of coriander, lemon zest, golden grain malt, and a hint of wintergreen. Finish has a sharp bitterness followed by some spice potpourri aftertastes.

ganache (6089) - New Jersey, USA - MAR 24, 2013
A fresh bottle. Strong and pleasantly herbal nose pushing lemon and rose hips in with the light tartness. With the cleanser feel, has some slight wittish character. Lightly hazy bright yellow body with a lacing white head. Taste is faintly sweet to start but dries out quickly as the bitterness picks up, not so much hoppy as stripping and herbal, nailing those medieval traditionals and bringing light flights of purifying astringency without the rubberiness. Peel and pepper, grainy hay. Clean yeast, fullish body, seems to be less alcoholic than it is, though I think I’d prefer a lighter body. Honestly, I’m uderwhelmed, but it’s fresh and repeatable.

Reviewed from notes. The appearance has a hazy pale golden yellow body with a two finger white foamy head that sticks around for most of the beer, some light sticky lacing is left in rings. The smell has a citrus/lemon coming through with some light pepper and a bit of mint shows up after a bit of warming. The taste has all of those previously mentioned flavors coming through in an earthy flavorful way, earthy aftertaste and finish. The palate is light to medium, sessionable, adequately carbonated for the style and for me leading to a nice smoothness all around. Overall, I say this is good for the style and very good to me.

bottle. Golden with one finger head. Light bodied saison with mild flavor and very little funk. Still, this is a very nice refreshing beer.

Let me preface this review by saying that I went in really wanting to love this beer - given the quality of helios, who wouldn’t? - by the middle of my first bottle, I was trying really hard just to like it - now, by the middle of my second bottle, I am trying hard not to hate it - first of all, it is not a saison - it is a dry wit - usually, I can be forgiving of adjunct-laden saisons - I had a local one recently that had quite a few adjuncts, but still managed to be quite tasty - perhaps because this is overspiced to the point of being unrecognizable as a saison, I cannot be forgiving - I like the dry, crisp character of the beer - however, all I can taste and smell are spices and a hint of tart citrus - overly bitter throughout - where is my baby helios, god dammit!?

Garrold (5844) - Sheffield, South Yorkshire, ENGLAND - JUN 14, 2014
Bottle from Bottledog, Kings Cross. Hazy, yellow colour. Thin, bubbly, white head. Smells like the lemon infused aftershave you’d get in a Turkish barbers shop. Lemongrass. Sorbet. Taste is dry, and a little pithy bitter. Fresh palate. A little creaminess. Finish is spicy dry, with bitterness at the end.

nearbeer (5669) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - JUN 20, 2013
Pint on tap. Lightly hazy golden body with a lasting disc of cream on top. Mild aroma of pine resin and earthy lemon honey. Tastes of earthy beeswax, resin and a touch of white grape skins. Medium body is dry and tingly with high carbonation.

Aurelius (5659) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - MAR 15, 2013
A sharp aroma that smells like you bathed a skunk in lemon juice. Misty, bright gold with a white filmy head. Good label, standard US longneck. Mineral, lightly astringent, lemon zest, funky notes. Medium to slightly light body, low carbo. Hoppy, lemon finish. ABC, Betton.
