COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Golden Monkey aged in Chardonnay barrels. “Our Golden Monkey is beloved by many, so we anticipate some heartfelt responses to our intriguing transformation of this beer,” expressed Victory brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “The wine barrel aging has had a substantial and delicious impact on the Golden Monkey.” Approximately 100 oak barrels that once held chardonnay varietal white wine from Wente Vineyards of Livermore, CA were filled with Golden Monkey and aged at ambient temperatures in the Downingtown brewery for 3 months. This process is an extension of an experiment dating back 6 years prior, when a single oak barrel once holding white wine from local vintner, Chaddsford Winery, was used in a similar manner to produce a test batch which never left the brewery. Deemed delicious by Victory brewmasters and brewing staff, the White Monkey project was made possible through a collaborative partnership with Wente Vineyards.

750 ml bottle into chalice, bottled on 3/14/2014. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep gold color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas lemon, orange zest, golden raisin, pear, apple, apricot, white wine, vanilla, oak, coriander, clove, pepper, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of fruity/spicy yeast , wine barrel, moderate malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of lemon, orange zest, golden raisin, pear, apple, apricot, white wine, vanilla, oak, coriander, clove, pepper, candi sugar, herbal, and yeast/oak earthiness. Good amount of earthy spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange zest, golden raisin, pear, apple, apricot, white wine, oak, clove, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, wine barrel, and pale malt sweetness; with a great crisp malt/yeast/oak flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and slightly tannic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged tripel. All around great complexity and balance fruity/spicy yeast, wine barrel, and pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

On tap at Blue Monk in Buffalo, NY. Smells like a sour, very sharp, very acidic, and a little bit of acid up front. Mellows very quickly though. A little bit of spice and a little bit of sweet wine feel to it. Nice.

Pours clear, deep amber with a mid-sized, lacing head.
Aroma is nettles, bourbon and white wine.
The taste is toffee, nettles, bourbon, oak barrells and white wine. Somewhat harsh alcohol finish.

Bottle. Pours a clear light amber-golden body with a lerge white creamy head. Nose is huge vanilla oaky tones, red berries, pale malts and hints of sugar. Taste is massive sweet vanilla oak tones, caramel, mild herbs and alcohol and hints of red berries and white sugar. Medium body and carbonation. Highly original stuff, this is like a light-hued barley wine, just barrel-aged intensely. I like it.

Bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours hazy deep golden with a rather small frothy and slightly fizzy offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is sweet, estery and phenolic with biscuits, Chardonnay wine, marzipan covered baked pears, banana bread, moist hay, white grapes, moist wood, glue and hints of alcohol. Taste is slightly sweet, tiny sour, estery and phenolic with biscuits, marzipan, baked pears, hay, white grapes, moist wood, leather, white pepper corns, coriander, lemon zest, white raisins and hints of Chardonnay wine. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny tart, tiny boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, tiny sour, estery and phenolic with biscuits, baked pears, lemon zest, marzipan, moist wood, white grapes, hay and white raisins. Quite nice white wine BA characteristics but a bit too marzipan and baked pears focused.

Bottle thanks to hubsluvsbeer: Poured a copper orange with creamy off white head. Aroma is winey. Taste is strong with vanilla, wine, fruit. Overpowering at first but nice finish.

Bottle. Pours clear dark golden/amber with a medium sized white head. Aroma is sweet malty, caramel, honey, ripe banana, vinous, alcohol, spices. Taste is medium sweet up front, vinous and finish is sweet esters with alcohol and lingering vinous oak notes. Medium bodied and average carbonation.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass Appearance – The beer pours a lightly hazed yellow-amber color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a nice level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell –The aroma of the beer is a mix of the traditional golden monkey and some oaky white wine and vanilla (as may be expected). The heaviest aromas are of some light fruity smells with peach, pear, and apricot and a bit of orange along with a honey smell. The yeasty smells are the second most potent, but being contended in intensity by the oaky vanilla and white wine aromas which give a somewhat of a more boozy aroma to the brew overall. Taste – The taste begins with a yeasty and fruity flavor with some honey flavors mixed within. The fruity flavors are those that were detected in the nose with just a hint of a yeasty white grape wine flavor upfront. The white wine flavor grows in intensity as the taste moves on however, with it being accompanied by some oaky and vanilla flavors. The wine, oak, vanilla, yeast, and wood really develop more toward the end, with other flavors of a lightly grassy and spiced taste of clove and coriander hitting the flavor profile. In the end, with all the transitions that have occurred, one is left with a rather dry and crisp, oaky mix of a wine and somewhat yeasty triple flavors to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thinner side with a carbonation level that is rather high and effervescent. Both are rather appropriate for the triple style as well as nice for the white wine flavors of the brew, making for a crisp and rather brisk and drinkable brew even at 9.5 % abv. Overall – The white wine and oak add an interesting dimension to the brew, but really don’t make it that much better. It is no better than the original in my opinion and hence, since it costs about 1.8x as much as the golden monkey, it is not really a worthwhile brew. It was good for one try, but not really outpacing the golden monkey and worth it.

Bottle, caged and corked. Deep golden color, bordering on orange-amber. Thin, creamy head. The aroma gives away a definite barrel character ... woody and farm-ish. The drink is very heavy-feeling, with a thick mouthfeel, a big-time buttery, Chardonnay layer ... like super rich icing on a cupcake. (#5574, 7/8/2014)
