On cask at the brewpub, pours a light clear brown with a thin tan head, the aroma is of slight fruit with a little bit of malt and roast, the flavor has some of the funky fruit touches on the front end with some of the caramel and malt sweetness in the finish, not a ton different from the normal version but not bad. madvike (3292) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 11, 2012
On cask at the brewpub, drank side-by-side with the original - Pours mahogany, with a foamy light tan head. Currants dominate the nose, bold and bright. The toastiness of the original is obscured by the fruit, and comes off more caramelly and sweet. More non-descript malt, but the fruit is the star here. Taste is a bit muddled--not sure if the currants or the toast wins, but the mix is a bit odd. Kind of reminded me of grape Kool-Aid, but in a good way. This might grow on me after having it several times--feels like an acquired taste. Chalky and dry in the mouth, thinnish and watery. Definitely an interesting experience.
