Sample at the brewpub. Dark brownish-black color with ruby around the edges, and a medium off-white head that recedes gradually to a wispy film. Yeast, dark fruit and caramel in the nose. Medium to full body with flavors of fruity yeast, anise and caramel malt. The finish is part root beer part Belgian yeast. Interesting, and decent overall. 3oz on tap at the brewpub. Pretty much black color. Thin ring of khaki head. Couple loose bits of lace. Dark fruit, light spice in the aroma. Light floral notes. Some winter type spices, ginger. Medium-bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp, lighter carbonation. Lightly chewy texture. Light slick, then drying in the finish. Moderate sweet taste, light to moderate bitter. Alcohol is reasonably well hidden. Decent dark strong ale. Some chocolate notes. notalush (5910) - Lakewood, Colorado, USA - JUN 27, 2014
Tap at the brewery - dark, cola-looking pour, which is fitting considering the fact that this basically tastes like root beer with bourbon poured into it - very sweet, very hot - some herbal and anise notes - just very cloying and boozy - couldn’t even finish a four ounce sample. madvike (3292) - Middleton, Wisconsin, USA - JUN 26, 2014
On tap at the brewpub - Pours cola-colored with a ring of tan head. Nose is bready, with anise and a bit of light roast and chocolate. Same taste--lots of anise, and that’s not my thing. Medium body, smooth with soft carbonation. cbfobes (2885) - Quad Cities, Illinois, USA - JUN 13, 2014
On tap at Vintage 6/7, pours a very dark brown almost black with a light brown head and spotty lacing, the aroma has quite a bit of chocolate and malt coming through with some of the belgian yeast making an appearance as well, the flavor has quite a bit of spice and pine on the front end with a roast like finish with some chocolate notes too, interesting.
