COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
When the leaves fall, there’s a chill in the air and the evening greedily takes hours from daylight, we stand strong and embrace the wintertime. It’s a time of rich foods, roaring fires and our favorite sweaters. Drinks change from refreshing to intense and satisfying. The Mitten is a Winter cider, a blend of last seasons best, aged in bourbon barrels, with the new season’s fresh pressed apple juice. Straight cider, aged for 3 seasons, finds notes of vanilla, caramel and charred American oak, balanced with the best of the orchard, over-ripe apples and their sweet, tart, earthy juice. Many barrels are filled, but only a small portion, the very smoothest, will find their way into The Mitten. We love wintertime, especially when we have The Mitten to keep us warm and happy through the long, cold night.

Perhaps I’m just not qualified for this sort of thing. To me it smells like apples and phenols with a touch of tartness. No perceivable bourbon, vanillin or whatever. Taste is apples and a bit of tartness and spicy with some booze.

Draft @ Barleys Overland Park - Clear, pale yellow green, still. Some funk on the nose, the barrel aging comes through, green apple. Solid.

Has a strong ripe, apple aroma. Appears golden and slightly sparkling with a white head of minimal proportion. There is a sweet apple taste, with a bit of tartness. Unfortunately, I couldnt tell it was bourbon barrel aged, this would have given a nice depth to the flavor I think. Pretty good for a cider

Pours a clean clear golden with now head or visible carbonation. Light musty apple aroma. Light green apple tart and sweet followed by a light woody dryness, booze is light if noticeable. Notes: Bottle from Cosentinos, Aug ’17

On tap @ Tørst. This is a clear looking apple pale yellowish one. No head what so ever. Smells really good. Lots of tart and almost musky apples. Canned pears, a mellow sweetness from yellow apples. What stands most out is the woodies. Really nice aroma. Tastes quite good also this. Its really low in the carbonation, near flat and it has a gliding oily texture in the mouth. Mild tartish and wood dry, yet shining with apple, apple juices and a little vanilla? Ah, a really good cider this. 15.06.2015

Tap. Pours clear pale golden with a small white head. Aromas of sweet apples, vanilla, light oak, pear. Taste is sweet, some vanilla oaky notes, mostly just apples and a bit of pear like sweetness. Dries out.

TW bottle. Looks like liquid gold. Plastic smell, apples, candy, white wine, bourbon and soap. Highly carbonated and bubbly. The bourbon kicks. It’s sweet finish deducts from the booze, which makes it more wine than bourbon. Simply a good cider.

As much as I prefer to avoid AB-InBev, it’s hard to turn down 750ml bottles of a delicious barrel-aged cider for $8.99. Pours clear and quite pale. Leans to the sweet side, with nice oak and vanilla overtones. Medium body (feels like it’s both light and airy, but with some rounded weightiness behind it), average carbonation. Overall: I enjoyed this immensely.

tmoreau (4591) - Lombard, Illinois, USA - JAN 19, 2017
On tap at Ellyn’s Tap & Grill in Glen Ellyn, IL. and dispensed to a large snifter, displaying a clear & bright, golden tone, with a modest layer of white foam that reduced to a persistent ring and light spots of lacing. The nose was apple & skins, subtle spice, and light hints of barrel & vanilla. Medium bodied, the taste was similar notes, with seltzer-like effervescence, a bit of funk, tartness & dryness, and a touch of apple core toward the finish. Tasty, with better than average complexity for a Cider.
