Bottle #404 12/14/12 picked up at Voodoo release. Poured black with a rim of tan foam. Pleasant aroma of bourbon choc and vanilla. Taste of strong choc and roastyness, slight boozy bourbon. Good stuff.

At ratebeer awards bottle share. Pours near black with a nice tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a marvelous dark molasses flavor with a brilliant touch of bourbon. Nicely done!

Pitch black and opaque without even the slightest trace of lighter color and a one finger dark mocha head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Really impressive retention for style and ABV, taking a while to settle. Large streaks of soapy lacing are left clinging to the glass. Looks great. Intense bourbon barrel aroma nicely integrated into the notes of the base beer. Very complex barrel character with spicy bourbon and a decent amount of charred oak without smelling burnt. Strong hints of toasted coconut along with silky vanilla bean and marshmallow. The barrel characteristics are very inviting without overpowering the other elements. Underneath the barrel, theres a nice balance of robust roast and sweeter dark malt notes. Hints of gourmet coffee bean, burnt toast, oatmeal and bitter dark chocolate countered by fudgey dessert-like sweetness. Molasses, toffee, caramel, bakers chocolate and caramel. Smells very good. Viscous full body with an excellent barrel character thats perfectly integrated into the flavors of the base beer. Amazing bourbon flavor that doesnt hinder/interfere with the roasted and sweet malt notes of give off any heat. Deceptively drinkable and had to believe its 12.5%. In addition, the spirit actually tastes like Pappy. Ive had quite a pew pappy barrel ages beers, and besides GI Rare, this is the only one that tastes similar to the bourbon. Lots of fiery spice, toasted coconut, toffee, caramel and cinnamon spice. Plenty of boozy sweetness but again, incredibly smooth and easy to drink. Delicate char with vanilla bean, coconut and mallow. Underneath, there is a complex dark malt backbone with a decent amount of roast countered by luscious, silky dessert-like sweetness. Roasted coffee/espresso bean with oatmeal and bittersweet chocolate followed by silky chocolate fudge, caramel, toffee, dark fruit, licorice and bakers chocolate. Overall, this is a well balanced beer with perfect barrel flavor thats nearly perfectly integrated into the complex malt notes. Excellent!

At Jacobs with friends. Pours Black with light lacing. Awesome nose complex bourbon, brownie edges. Taste is dark malt, medium to thin body. Aroma is amazing, taste is slightly too thin, and finish is alright.

Bottle thanks to CarolinaKevin - shared among friends. Pours opaque black with a small tan head, fizzy and quick to dissipate with a bit of lacing. Aroma is bourdon forward, molasses, coconut, chocolate. Flavor is medium sweet and light plus bitter, rich. A bit hot, but not bad for ABV. Medium body.

Thick and black. Licorice and chocolate, bit of bourbon. Chocolate, espresso, ash, bourbon, almond and coffee finish, little hot. Good but not among the greats.

Pours dark murky brown and settles pitch black with a very small dark brown head. Bourbon and sweet licorice on the nose. Roasted malts, coffee and chocolate too. There is only a light bitterness which I really enjoy. The taste is also bourbon forward with booze, raisins and vanilla, a little licorice again, soy and a slight vinous oakyness. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side when compared to other big boy stouts, but it drinks very very well non the less. What you need to know is that the Pappy dominates both the nose and the palate. Again my good pal Pistol Pete aka Mr.Bosspour came through with another great beer. Thanks for sharing.

Woodshed 3.0! Big thanks to dak for saving this whole series and sharing with us. Awesome!! Bottle pours with a dark brown body that supports a thin tan head. The mild aroma offers up smooth smelling residual sugars, molasses and sweetened dark roasted malts. There isnt much barrel noticed in the nose. The taste is smooth and rich with a mix of dark roasted malts, a sliver of burnt malts, slippery residual sugars and dark roasted coffee. Behind those notes lurks a smooth mellow soft bourbon booziness. Nice.
