COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

A Christmasy dunkel beer was a nice addition to my sampler tray. The daily tap special at Holy Grale, this would have been worth a full pint if I would have had more time. If you are lucky enough to be in the area do not miss whatever German drafts they have at the time.

Aroma / Appearance - The body looks like a glass of warm apple cider. Malty caramel apples add a sweet nutty texture. This isn’t complex but it is very pleasing.

Flavor / Palate - The taste of fresh apple cider chased with a bit of nuttiness opens well. A dry finish works its way to the back of the throat. One weakness is that over times it does not really improve. It might have been the handling in the way to the Midwest; I would love to try some beers in this style and the other Germanic ones at the source.

Flasche. - Tiefes Rotbraun.

Imported bottle. Straightforward dunkel, caramel and raisins predominate. Slight hoppy spice lingers nicely. Inoffensive and drinkable.

Bottle pours amber-brown with one finger yellow head. Malty aroma, kind of an adjunct odor. Taste a little sweet, malty, slight nuts and banana. Mild finish of German hops. Pretty easy drinking.

On tap @ Mikkeller. Dark amber colored beer with an off-white head. Aroma is cola, cherry, and toasted bread. A hint of chocolate and some raisin. Not bad. Flavor is a bit sweeter than expected. A lot of cola, cherry, and raisin. Toasted bread, chocolate, and very mild roast. Almost no bitterness.

On tap at Mikkeller Bar SF. It pours a reddish amber color with an off white head. The aroma has nice maltiness that comes across as cherry and plum. A bit of cherry syrup. The flavor is very thick on the palate and malty with more cherry and raisin. A little toast. Virtually no hop character. Very rich and malty, but I would have preferred a little more dry toasty character to balance the fruitiness. Well done.
