080417. This is possibly the best German beer that I have had and it deserves high praise indeed. A rare find at the new Malt Traders at Southbank I enjoyed this bottle while people watching. The beer looks great when poured into a glass and has a deep toffee colour and a large fluffy head of sweet smelling foam. It would be a shame if you drank this beer straight from the bottle as it deserves to be poured into a glass. The aroma is full on malt with a sweetness thrown into the mix. Like the aroma the flavour is malt heavy and fills the mouth with a wonderful toffee and vanilla flavour. The finish is like everything else about the beer - very good. UPDATED: APR 9, 2011 Smells of wood, earth and the usual bron sugars/caramel, but with a slight char to the proceedings. Some pencil shavings in the aroma. Great carb level, great body (if a tad thin), lasting head, lovely medium brown color with a little rust orange when there is not a lot of beer in the glass, super clear pour. Great loaves of sharp rye and dark wheat in the flavor, a little acidic, forest-like, a little hop spice (pepper, grass), brown sugar. Sharp, snazzy flavor and body. I guess one could complain slightly that the body and flavor combination is a tad watery, but to me this is just part of the charm of a solidly made and very east to drink beer.
RERATE: Well, I’ve had this many times between October and April. Amazing beer in the variety of flavors - it has everything and is very fresh every time I get it. wlajwl (6884) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - MAR 25, 2012
Aroma is heavy on dark malts, with some graininess as well. The flavor is caramel, toffee, nuttiness and a smooth finish. No off flavors or harshness and a good flavor, this was a great dunkel. neverleaveopen (254) - GERMANY - APR 25, 2016

Bottle in glass at Guthega Inn. The perfect dark beer to go with Goulash or a homemade sausage and sauerkraut. Full flavoured, well rounded. Those monks know what they are doing!

Had under the alias "Monk’s Christmas" at Holy Grale, Louisville. Real nice malt profile with caramel, raisins, pineapple and light chocolate, but without the overbearing chocolate/caramel of many Dunkels. Appearance was reddish cola brown with bone head. Flavor matched the nose, but with the wonderful toasty, nutty finish that I enjoy in so many German beers. Palate was soft and chewy. Fantastic beer. Bottle, warm thanks to pivnizub. Red chestnut, big golden lacing ftoth. Houneyroasted almond aroma with a light metallic edge. Solid mouthfeel, sweet fruity groundwork, berries, light roasted nuts, well balanced and aromatic. Roast retronasal. Lovely! drewaha (129) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JUN 1, 2013
Pours a hazy orange brown with a little head that doesn’t last too long. Smell is sweet malty and caramelly. Taste has a great malt flavor and a smooth sweet finish. Deliciously light brew. Good for any time. GoufCustom (2034) - HONG KONG - APR 11, 2014
500 ml bottle bought at foodGARDEN in D2 Place, Lai Chi Kok.
Looks: Clear deep amber ruby colour; One finger head and crumpety off-white foam which lasts for about 1 minute; Small sticky lacing and quite fizzy carbonation.
Aroma: Fragrant and sweet roasted dark malt, with strong caramel and toffee, cream, sugar, light coffee, and thin lemony grass hops.
Taste: Medium-sweet lightly roasted malt, with nuts, light smokiness, sticky toffee, caramel, brown sugar, double cream, light coffee, light lime, grass, and moderate bitter hops.
Body: Close to light. Thin but sticky palate.
Mouth Feel: Dynamic and tensile! Moderately light roasted malt, not so ‘dark’, but with full nuttiness and some smokiness. The real strength lies on toffee and caramel - sticky, yummy, low sweet - that make things so lively and chop-licking. Beautiful! Also rich in cream, paired with some nice light coffee and brown sugar. Really comforting as well a taste-bug opener. Oh yes!
Hoppiness: Thin lemon and grass nose, light lime and notable grassy taste. Moderate light bitterness to compliment the light brown sugar for a creamy sticky sweet-bitter finish.
After Taste: Quite dry; Very easy and chewy to mouth.
Comments: Good Dunkels come in many different ways to please, and this one really sweeps my awful memories of mediocre German macro / micro dark lagers away. This is a traditional Bavarian Dunkel, well made, with nice aroma lively sticky toffee palate, modestly low sweetness and just-right hoppiness. Not only it is tasty, it basically changes my previously poor perception of this beer style, for the better. Highly recommended!
P.S. What a fine choice to celebrate my 600th ratings! :-)
