Westbrook’s Belgian Quadrupel was a short-lived member of its special collection, going on tap almost exclusively at the brewery and ostensibly disappearing. A brewery tour stop in the barrel room indicates that most of this puppy has been aging ever since, and here’s your chance to sample the results. The Mourvèdre wine barrel should complement the massive dark fruit and malt components of the Quad quite nicely.

Tap at the Craft Beer Co - 11/08/12. Dark black with a thin head that soon cleared to the edge. All sorts going on in this beer in both nose and taste! Aroma - port/ wine, butterscotch, toffee, spices, dark fruit, malts, aniseed. Taste - Dark fruits, fig/raisen, mollasses, burnt tofee and sugar, spice, even a dose of mint. Medium to full bodied with a little alcohol in the finish but just the right level. Would definately re-visit!

Keg at Craft Beer Co., London. Dark brownish red. A lovely and powerful aroma of chocolate, liqueur, smoke, roast and red fruit jumps out of the glass. It doesn’t exactly taste like a Rochefort 10, missing a lot of the complex dark fruit characteristics, but the wine barrel is implemented superbly and almost makes up for its shortcomings. Mouthfeel is predictably thick, but it’s quite hot and heavy which makes it slightly tough to work through. A great experiment though, and I was glad to try it.

On tap at Craft Beer Co. Red wine shortbread toffee. Pretty yummy touch of sourness. Pretty good. Really interesting. I liked it. Kept me more than interested.

Leighton (22820) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 29, 2012
Tap at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012. Pours deep brown with a strong, light tan foam head. Tons of buttery toffee in the nose, with sugary licorice and ripe fruits as well. Medium sweet and lightly tangy with grapes and cherries. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Tangy on the finish, which cuts into the booze pleasantly. There are also notes of faint buttery toffee and dark sugars at the end. The condition of this beer is questionable. And the beer definitely doesn’t have the depth of complexity that a quadruple should have. A mixed bag here.

Scopey (16277) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 12, 2012
Tap at CBC, May 2012. It pours very dark brown-ruby, with a small beige head. The nose is dark fruit, vanilla, toasted coconut, cream cheese, vinous and marzipan. The taste is prune, plum, cherry, red grape, juicy tartness, vinegar, alcohol warmth and vinous notes, with a sweet-sour finish. Medium-full body and fine carbonation. An interesting and tasty beer.
