Special Bitter Ale
A bitter to commemorate the year 1965 when the Black Eagle Brewery closed, Winston Churchill passed away and Robert Wicks was born. Brewed to a similar recipe that Bill Wickett used for his parting brew. Northdown hops give a clean, refreshing full bodied flavour for which English ales are famous. East Goldings for flavour and aroma.

[email protected] Pours clear amber with lazing offwhite head. Aroma has light malt, biscuit, caramel and some fruityness and a hint of grassy hops. Taste is light malty with biscuit, caramel and lightly fruity yet hoppy with grass and hay. Finish is semi-sweet with balanced hops and lightly dry.

On draught Carpenters Arms Limpsfield Chart. Also at Royal Oak Crockham Hill and The Queens Head Downe. Absolutely first class beer. I purposely travel miles for this. Once, after being served a pint, I remarked on a sign on the bar about guest beers. The barman was happy to change it for me but I declined. "No thanks, this is just about as good as beer gets." This is just about the best balance of malt and hops possible.

Cask at The Railway, Putney as ’Westerham 1965’. Dark orange, clear, still, creamy white head leaves full lacing. Aroma is apple peel, white bread. Body is medium, smooth, low carbonation. Taste is apple peel, white pepper, apple pie with cinnamon, resin and a soft bitterness. Not a big fan. This was the most popular beer on the bar by far - about 5 pints were drawn for different customers after my half. They can have it!

[email protected] bar, CPH - amber pour with white head. Toasty malty aroma and taste, some caramel malts, some light toffee, herbal and twiggy hoppy, bitter finish. Ok. ---Sent via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cask at the William Webb Ellis (JDW), Twickenham, 16/02/13. Clear dark golden amber with a medium sized bubbly off white head which retains well. Nose carries malts, caramel, toffee, light berry fruits. Taste comprises caramel, brown sugars, biscuit, background hops and fruits. Medium bodied with a little bite, moderate carbonation. Decent enough.

Cask. Slightly hazy amber with a small and creamy off-white head. Lightly sweet caramel in the nose combined with some greasy hops. Medium body, low carbonation, quite some odd phenols and a dry finish. Unspectacular. 190912
